Chapter 3 - Midnight Convoy to Gary

The thunderous roar of four twin-turbocharged Escalades tore through the quiet, rain-slicked suburbs of Chicago, hurtling south toward the industrial border of Indiana at breakneck speed. Inside the reinforced cabin of the lead vehicle, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Clara sat in the leather captain's chair, holding Bella tightly against her chest as if loosening her grip even an inch would cause the child to evaporate into thin air. Bella had fallen into an exhausted slumber, her tiny fingers tangled securely in Clara’s chestnut hair.

I sat across from them, my laptop open, watching the blinking red transponder signal pinging near an isolated hangar at the Gary private airfield. Beside me, heavy tactical rifles lay ready on the console.

""Talk to me, Clara,"" I said softly, keeping my tone as gentle as my rough voice could manage. ""Tell me how this happened. How did my mother even find you?""

Clara wiped a tear from her cheek, staring down at Bella’s peaceful face. ""My father was a mid-level accountant who worked for your family's legitimate shipping front. When he died suddenly of a heart attack, the medical bills drained everything. I was eighteen, drowning in debt, facing eviction, when a high-end private medical agency contacted me. They said an elite family needed an anonymous, closed surrogate through IVF because the family’s daughter-in-law was infertile. They offered enough money to clear my father's debts and pay for college.""

A cold realization settled deep into the pit of my stomach. ""My mother told me Bella’s mother was a high-society Italian socialite who died during emergency childbirth overseas. She claimed she brought my daughter home to honor a final agreement. She fabricated an entire ghost to keep me from ever searching for the real woman.""

""They kept me isolated in a private clinic in rural Wisconsin for nine months,"" Clara continued, her voice trembling. ""I never saw the parents. But during the ultrasounds, the technician slipped up and mentioned there were two heartbeats. When I asked about it, they immediately switched my doctor and told me it was a phantom echo. Then, during the delivery, they drugged me heavily. When I woke up... they gave me two death certificates and a check. They warned me that if I ever tried to contact the clinic or ask questions, my father's remaining pension would be revoked and I would end up in prison for breach of contract.""

""And the bracelets?"" I asked, looking at the silver band on her wrist.

""The day before the delivery, a young nurse felt sorry for me. She smuggled in two identical engraved bracelets I had bought with my last few dollars. One silver, one gold. She promised to put them on the babies before they were taken away. I kept the matching silver clasp for myself, swearing that if my babies were out there in the world, God would lead me to them."" She looked up at me, defiance burning through her tears. ""I took that catering job tonight because I overheard the agency manager talking about the Romano mansion. I had been digging through old newspaper archives for months, trying to match the timeline of your sudden fatherhood with the date my twins were stolen. I didn't care if your guards shot me, Lorenzo. I had to see the baby with my own eyes.""

Before I could answer, Marco’s voice crackled through the vehicle's comms system. ""Boss, we're two minutes out. The hangar doors are open, and a Gulfstream jet is spinning up its engines on the runway. We have visual on four armed hostiles loading black crates into the cargo bay.""

""Ram the perimeter gate,"" I ordered coldly, checking the magazine of my sidearm. ""Nobody takes off. If the pilot touches that throttle, put a fifty-caliber round through the cockpit.""

Clara gasped, pulling Bella tighter. ""Lorenzo... please, don't let them hurt her!""

May you like

I reached out, placing my large, calloused hand over hers. For the first time in my violent, unforgiving life, a vow felt heavier than gold. ""I will bring our daughter back to your arms, Clara. That is a promise from the head of the Romano family.""

The Escalade surged forward, tires screaming against wet tarmac as the iron security gate exploded into twisted metal under our reinforced steel bumper.
