Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

I spent the next twenty-four hours under heavy sedation in a private medical ward set up inside Gunther’s secondary compound in Lake Forest. When I finally woke, the gentle hum of a heart monitor greeted me, along with the intoxicating scent of fresh lilies and woodsmoke.

Sitting beside the bed, still wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, was Gunther. He had dark shadows beneath his eyes, looking as though he hadn't slept a single minute.

“You’re awake,” he said quietly, setting down a cup of black coffee.

“Sam?” was the first word that escaped my dry, cracked lips.

“Sam is completely safe,” Gunther reassured me instantly, leaning forward and resting his hand over mine on the white linen sheets. His touch was warm, grounding me in reality. “I moved him to a specialized military rehabilitation hospital in Switzerland this morning under an assumed identity. He has around-the-clock private security, the best neurosurgeons in Europe, and enough funding to secure his future for the next fifty years.”

Tears of profound relief slipped down my cheeks. “Why are you doing all of this for me? I’m just a maid who fell asleep on your bed.”

“You were never just a maid, Kayla,” Gunther murmured, his thumb gently caressing the back of my hand. “You are the only person in my entire life who looked at me with honesty instead of greed. When the bullets started flying, you didn't run to save yourself. You picked up a gun to save me.”

The heavy mahogany door opened, and Marcus stepped into the room, holding a sealed black manila envelope. He glanced at our intertwined hands, subtly clearing his throat.

“It’s done, boss,” Marcus reported quietly. “Dante Romano's operations have been completely dismantled. Dante attempted to flee on a private jet out of Gary, but our men intercepted him on the runway. He signed over all northern territory rights, deed transfers, and financial accounts. He has been... permanently retired from the state of Illinois.”

“Burn the remains of his organization,” Gunther ordered dismissively, never looking away from me. “I don't want a single trace of his name left in this city.”

Marcus nodded respectfully, set the envelope on the desk, and quietly exited, pulling the door shut behind him.

The weight of the silence returned, but this time, it was charged with an undeniable, simmering heat. Gunther reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box, opening it to reveal an intricately carved platinum key with a tiny sapphire embedded in the head.

“What is this?” I asked softly.

“The deed and master key to the penthouse atop the Woods Tower in downtown Chicago,” Gunther said, his intense gaze boring into mine. “It’s yours. Unconditionally. You can take Sam, move to Switzerland, or stay in Chicago as an independent woman with more wealth than you could spend in three lifetimes. Your debt is paid ten times over. You are free, Kayla.”

My breath hitched. Freedom. It was the only thing I had ever prayed for during all those brutal, sixteen-hour shifts of scrubbing floors and skipping meals. Yet, looking into Gunther’s fierce, protective eyes, the thought of leaving him felt like tearing out my own heart.
