Chapter 4 - The Whispering Shadows

Living on the third floor of the Woods estate felt less like staying in a palace and more like living inside an armed bunker preparing for an inevitable siege. Over the next three weeks, my life transformed completely. During the day, I accompanied Gunther to high-stakes boardrooms and discreet shipping terminals. At night, I studied logistics sheets, cross-referencing supply chain manifests with bank accounts, searching for discrepancies that Gunther suspected were bleeding millions from his legitimate operations.

Late one Thursday evening, around 1:00 a.m., the mansion was wrapped in its usual heavy quiet. Gunther was locked in his downstairs study handling an overseas conference call, and I was in my room reviewing shipping manifests from the Port of Indiana. That’s when the numbers finally jumped out at me.

For eight consecutive months, shipments of industrial steel imported through Romano-affiliated docks were officially logged as empty containers returning to port, yet the transport trucks were consistently recorded with a twenty-ton axle weight at the weigh stations outside Gary, Indiana. Someone was smuggling heavy cargo—weapons, untracked bullion, or narcotics—directly through Gunther’s transit corridors, using his corporate licenses to bypass federal customs.

And the signature approving the manifest clearances wasn't an outside hacker. It was an internal routing code belonging to the estate's head of private operations: Victor Cruz, Gunther’s most trusted childhood friend and chief lieutenant.

Cold panic surged through my veins. Victor was the man who organized the estate’s security perimeter. He had the gate codes, the camera overrides, and the guard schedules. If Victor was working with Dante Romano, Gunther was sleeping in a death trap.

I grabbed the printed manifests, slipped on a pair of soft house slippers, and hurried out into the dimly lit hallway toward Gunther’s private elevator. But as I passed the arched alcove near the east wing staircase, the low murmur of voices made me freeze.

“Everything is set for Saturday night,” a voice whispered harshly. It was Victor.

I flattened my back against the wall, holding my breath, pressing myself deep into the velvet curtains that draped the floor-to-ceiling windows.

“The perimeter cameras will undergo a routine system reboot at 2:00 a.m.,” Victor continued quietly into his encrypted satellite phone. “It leaves an eight-minute blind spot along the northern perimeter fence. Tell Dante to send his cleanest team. Gunther will be in the master bedroom. I want it done cleanly. No collateral damage to the art or the safe. And the girl—the maid he’s parading around?”

There was a brief pause as the person on the other end answered. Victor let out a callous, humorless chuckle.

“Dispose of her too. She’s an unnecessary variable. After Saturday, the northern territory belongs to Romano, and I take over the logistics empire. Make sure the money is in the Zurich account by dawn.”

The phone clicked shut. Victor’s heavy, deliberate footsteps faded down the hall toward the downstairs exit.

My lungs burned as I finally drew in a ragged breath. My entire body shook with terror. Dante wasn't planning a public hit or a boardroom takeover; he was orchestrating an inside slaughter. And the only thing standing between Gunther Woods and a dozen professional assassins was a former maid holding a stack of shipping receipts.
