Chapter 10 - Queen of the City

Gunther didn’t panic. Instead, he pulled out his phone and tapped the screen once, activating an encrypted live video feed. He turned the screen toward me.

On the screen was Sam’s hospital room in Zurich. Standing beside his bed were not assassins, but six heavily armed operatives wearing the uniform of the Swiss Federal Police, alongside Marcus. Sitting tied to chairs in the corner, thoroughly subdued, were three hitmen sent by the council.

“Did they really think I wouldn’t anticipate their move?” Gunther murmured, a cold, victorious smirk playing on his lips. “I planted that tracking leak myself three weeks ago. The council walked straight into an international sting.”

Gunther signaled Marcus on the screen. “Execute the asset seizures. Freeze every bank account linked to the council members. Hand their offshore shell companies to the Department of Justice.”

“Copy that, boss,” Marcus replied before the feed cut to black.

Gunther turned back to the crowded ballroom. Across the room, seated at the primary VIP table, were four elderly men in lavish tuxedos—the remaining elders of the Chicago Syndicate. When their phones began buzzing frantically with alerts of frozen bank accounts, federal seizure notices, and arrest warrants, their smug expressions transformed into pure, unadulterated terror.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder until a dozen federal agents and Chicago police detectives flooded the Cultural Center, walking directly past Gunther and arresting the four elders in front of the entire horrified gathering of high society.

Gunther raised his champagne flute toward the arrested men as they were dragged away in handcuffs, utterly neutralizing the final remnants of the corrupt old guard without firing a single bullet. The entire room erupted into whispers of stunned disbelief. Gunther Woods hadn't just won the underworld war; he had legitimized his empire, destroying his enemies using their own greed against them.

As the chaos settled, the classical orchestra resumed playing a soft, sweeping waltz. Gunther turned to me, offering his hand.

“Dance with me, Kayla.”

I placed my hand in his, and he led me to the center of the dance floor. Hundreds of eyes watched us, but in that moment, the entire world shrank until it was just the two of us moving under the glowing Tiffany dome.

“The war is over,” Gunther whispered, holding me close against his chest. “The syndicates are finished. The businesses are fully legitimate. Sam is walking, completely safe, and returning home next month to attend college.”

“And what happens to you?” I asked, looking up into those piercing gray eyes that had once terrified me, but now felt like home.

Gunther slowed our steps, stopping in the center of the floor. Slowly, deliberately, the most powerful man in Chicago dropped down to one knee before me. The ballroom gasped in unison.

He pulled a velvet box from his pocket, revealing a flawless ten-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that caught every ray of light in the hall.

“Three months ago, you woke up in my bed, terrified of a gun pointed at your head,” Gunther said, his voice clear, steady, and carrying across the hushed crowd. “You taught me what loyalty means. You taught me what it feels like to have a heart worth protecting. I don't want to rule this city alone, Kayla. I want you by my side. Not as my assistant. Not as my shadow. But as my wife. Will you marry me?”

Tears spilled over my lashes, but this time, they were born of pure, radiant joy. The days of counting pennies, skipping meals, and enduring sleepless sixteen-hour shifts were gone forever.

“Yes,” I breathed, a bright smile lighting up my face. “Yes, Gunther. A thousand times, yes.”

Gunther slid the ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss as the entire ballroom erupted into thunderous applause.

The maid who had accidentally fallen asleep in a mafia boss's bed was now the queen of his empire."
