Chapter 3 - The Lion's Den

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Ballroom at the Drake Hotel cast a glittering glow over Chicago’s most dangerous elite. Men in five-thousand-dollar tuxedos sipped vintage champagne, while their wives and mistresses flaunted diamonds paid for with blood money. To the average onlooker, it appeared to be a lavish charity gala. To me, it was a den of vipers waiting for the first sign of weakness.

I clutched a leather tablet to my chest, dressed in an understated emerald-green sheath dress that accentuated my slender frame while remaining strictly professional. Standing half a step behind Gunther, I felt the sheer magnetic pull of his power. Every conversation paused when he walked into the room. Men nodded with tight, cautious smiles; women watched him with hungry curiosity.

“Gunther! My favorite competitor,” a booming, slick voice rang out.

A tall man with slicked-back dark hair and an arrogant sneer approached, flanking two enormous bodyguards whose jackets bulged conspicuously with concealed firearms. Dante Romano. The ruthless underboss whose ruthless expansion was threatening to spark an all-out turf war across the Midwest.

“Dante,” Gunther replied with flat, emotionless courtesy, barely offering a nod. “You went all out for an afternoon gathering.”

“Only the best when we celebrate progress,” Dante purred, his serpent-like eyes immediately drifting away from Gunther to settle heavily on me. His gaze traced down my neck to my bare arms, lingering with predatory intent. “And who is this lovely creature? You usually travel with stone-faced hitmen, Woods. Who knew you had such an exquisite eye for secretaries?”

“Her name is Kayla. She is my personal aide,” Gunther said, his tone dropping an octave, carrying a subtle edge of steel. “Her duties are administrative. Address your business to me.”

Dante chuckled, taking a brazen step toward me. He reached out a hand, fingers curling as if to touch my chin. “A girl this delicate shouldn’t be filing paperwork for an old brute like Gunther, sweetheart. Why don't you come work for the Romanos? Triple the pay, and you get to enjoy the penthouse view.”

Every instinct from my years of surviving in the rough alleys of Humboldt Park surged to the surface. I took a deliberate step backward, holding his gaze without blinking. “I prefer working for men who build empires, Mr. Romano, not boys who inherited them. Thank you for the offer, but my calendar is entirely full.”

A suffocating silence descended over our corner of the ballroom. One of Dante’s bodyguards twitched, his hand moving toward his jacket, but the subtle click of Gunther’s hand resting casually against his own waistband froze everyone in place. Dante’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly, venomous sneer.

“Careful, girl,” Dante hissed, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “People who talk too loud in this city end up floating in the river before the morning papers hit the stands.”

“If you touch a single hair on her head, Dante,” Gunther said, his voice deadly quiet, vibrating with absolute authority, “I won’t just put you in the river. I will burn your family's ports to the waterline, salt your warehouses, and erase your name from this state. Now walk away while you still have two working legs.”

Dante’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He glared at Gunther, then gave me a look filled with vicious promise before turning on his heel and vanishing into the crowd.

My knees felt like water. Gunther glanced down at me, the corners of his lips curving into the faintest hint of an approving smile. “Sharp tongue. Dangerous, but effective.”

“He’s going to try to kill us, isn’t he?” I whispered, my heart racing.

“He’s going to try,” Gunther agreed calmly, turning to head toward the exit. “Which is why you are never leaving my sight again.”
