Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Retaliation

Alexander did not execute Richard Reynolds in front of me. He maintained that final shred of restraint, dragging the disgraced elder out by his collar and handing him over to the council's internal tribunal, stripping the Reynolds family of every asset, business front, and scrap of influence within the city limits. Sophia and her father were placed on an international freighter that very night, banished permanently to an obscure estate in South America, their reign of manipulative terror shattered into dust.
Yet, as Alexander and I stepped into the private executive elevator descending toward the underground garage, the adrenaline began to drain from my limbs, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion that made my knees buckle. Alexander caught me before I could fall, his powerful arms wrapping around my waist with infinite gentleness, pulling my back flush against his broad chest. His breathing was ragged, his face buried deep into the crook of my neck, his entire body trembling against mine.
""You insane, magnificent woman,"" he choked out, his voice thick with unshed tears. ""Why would you risk coming there? Do you have any idea what they would have done if a stray bullet—""
""You were going to let them kill you, Alexander,"" I whispered, turning slowly within the circle of his arms to face him, my hands instinctively resting against his lapels. ""You were going to commit suicide just to make sure I had money. You idiot. You arrogant, brilliant, stubborn idiot.""
""Money was the only thing I knew how to give you,"" he confessed, his defenses entirely shattered, tears finally tracking down his hollow cheeks. ""I didn't know how to be a husband. My father taught me how to shoot, how to extort, and how to bury bodies, but nobody ever taught me how to hold a woman without breaking her. When you threw that ring away, Claire, the entire world went completely black. I realized that every dollar, every dock, every ounce of power I had built meant nothing if I had to return to an empty house where your laugh used to live.""
The elevator dinged softly, arriving at the subterranean garage. But before the doors could slide fully open, a piercing shriek of shattering glass echoed through the concrete cavern.
The Marcone family had not waited for the council's verdict. A rogue black sedan accelerated violently across the polished concrete, headlights blinding us as automatic gunfire erupted toward the elevator bank. Sparks flew in violent cascades off the reinforced steel pillars, the deafening roar of assault rifles turning the parking garage into a hellscape of ricocheting lead.

Alexander did not hesitate for a microsecond. He did not draw his weapon; he used his own body as an impenetrable human shield, wrapping himself completely around me and our unborn child, throwing us both behind a massive concrete support column. A sickening, wet thud echoed through the concrete as a stray round tore into Alexander’s left shoulder, but he did not utter a single cry of pain. He simply locked his jaw, his arms tightening around me like iron bands, his eyes fixed on mine with fierce, unyielding devotion.
""Stay down, my love,"" he whispered calmly, blood blooming through his charcoal suit jacket. ""Nobody touches my family. Not today. Not ever.""
