Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Houseguest

Morning arrived wrapped in thick gray fog, bringing with it a chilling stillness that felt unnatural for a bustling suburban neighborhood. As I stepped onto the small wooden porch to collect the morning milk, a large wooden crate sat beside my welcome mat, unmarked save for a delicate white ribbon. Inside lay jars of imported organic honey, prenatal herbs known only to high-end holistic specialists, and a custom silver locket. My fingers hesitated before opening the locket; resting inside was the tiny silver wedding band I had discarded six months ago. It had been retrieved, meticulously buffed clean of garbage residue, and fitted with a tiny interior inscription: Forgive me.
A sudden knock at the front door made me drop the locket onto the cushions of my armchair. Expecting Alexander’s imposing silhouette or another stern warning from Nathan, I pulled the latch with caution, only to find Sophia standing on my porch, shielded by a clear umbrella held by a private driver who remained near the curb. She looked remarkably out of place among the peeling paint and fallen maple leaves of my modest rental, her sharp designer heels clicking sharply against the weathered boards.
""May I come in?"" she asked, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness that couldn't conceal the sharp undercurrent of desperation beneath it. ""Or are you going to force the future mistress of the Moretti household to stand in the damp morning cold?""
""You have ten seconds to state your business before I release my landlord’s German Shepherd,"" I lied smoothly, leaning against the doorframe with folded arms, refusing to grant her an inch of entry into my sanctuary.
Sophia’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly, venomous sneer. ""Don't play the proud, untouchable victim, Claire. Everyone in the family knows you were nothing more than a convenient, quiet rebound Alexander kept in the dark while I was studying abroad in Florence. He married you because his grandfather demanded a stable domestic front, not because he looked at you with passion. Now you resurface with a child, trying to anchor him to you just when he was finally preparing to announce our formal engagement to the syndicate.""
A cold laugh escaped my lips before I could suppress it. ""If Alexander wanted to marry you, Sophia, he would have done so the day after I threw my ring away. You’ve had six entire months alone with him in that massive mansion. Why haven't the wedding invitations been sent? Why are you standing on the porch of a rundown duplex in Evanston arguing with a pregnant ex-wife instead of picking out bridal china on Michigan Avenue?""
The truth struck her across the face like a physical slap; her pale cheeks flushed with furious crimson. ""He is obsessed with guilt, nothing more! When he found out where you were today, he canceled our dinner with the governor. He spent all night locked in his study staring at old security footage from the banquet! You think you’ve won, but a mob boss doesn't love children, Claire—he loves control. If you have that baby, he will take it, raise it behind bulletproof glass, and discard you just like he did five years ago. Take this."" She thrust a thick manila envelope toward my chest. ""Five million dollars in bearer bonds. Leave Illinois. Disappear across the country and don't look back.""

Before I could swat the offensive envelope away, a heavy, leather-gloved hand reached over my shoulder from behind the porch pillar, snatching the envelope from Sophia’s grasp with brutal swiftness.
""Offering bribes on my behalf, Sophia?"" Alexander’s voice was a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated straight through my spine. He had approached the house on foot through the backyard path, entirely silent, his trench coat damp with morning mist and his eyes burning with an unholy fury that made even the morning frost seem warm by comparison.
