Chapter 4 - The Truth Unmasked

Sophia stepped back so rapidly she nearly stumbled down the porch steps, her designer handbag slipping from her grasp into the damp mud. ""Alexander! I... I was merely trying to spare you the indignity of a public scandal. You know the commission cannot afford to see you distracted by an illegitimate heir right now, especially with the Marcone family pushing on our southern docks!""

Alexander stepped past me, his massive frame deliberately shielding me from Sophia’s view. He held the thick envelope of bearer bonds in his gloved fingers for a fraction of a second before systematically tearing it in half, then into quarters, letting five million dollars flutter like worthless autumn leaves into the wet grass. The raw disrespect in his action was absolute.

""The only scandal in this city,"" Alexander whispered, his voice dangerously soft, ""is that I allowed you back into my grandfather’s hall six months ago. Nathan told you to leave Chicago three months ago when you leaked our private banquet photos to the social registers. I tolerated your pathetic attempts to stay relevant because your father was my mentor. But you set foot near my wife again, Sophia, and your father’s legacy will not protect you from the river.""

""She is not your wife!"" Sophia shrieked, stripping away every ounce of her polished socialite demeanor. ""She threw your ring in the garbage! She hates you, Alexander! Look at her! She won't even look you in the eyes!""

""Get in the car,"" Alexander commanded, his voice dropping into the terrifying pitch that made hardened hitmen drop to their knees. ""Nathan is waiting at the end of the block. He will escort you directly to O’Hare airport. If your private jet is still on the tarmac by sunset, I will confiscate your family’s estates in Lake Forest.""

Sophia stared at him in utter disbelief, searching his eyes for the doting, lovesick boy who had once written her poetry a decade ago. But she found only the merciless devil who owned the city. Bursting into humiliating sobs, she turned, scrambled down the porch steps, and practically ran toward her awaiting town car, her heels sinking deep into the mud with every frantic stride.

When the car roared away and silence settled over the misty suburban street, the heavy air grew suffocating between the two of us. Alexander stood on the narrow wooden deck, his shoulders rising and falling with heavy breaths. He turned to face me, looking vulnerable in a way no living person had ever seen him. The notorious king of Chicago was trembling.

""You should leave too, Alexander,"" I whispered, holding onto the doorframe for support as my lower back twitched with a dull, aching fatigue. ""Ripping up money and threatening Sophia doesn't erase five years of being treated like a shameful secret. It doesn't undo the night you let warm medicine spill across my hands so you could throw your arms around her.""

Alexander looked down at his own hands, his dark leather gloves flexing as if trying to grasp onto something that was slipping away forever. ""I spent five years hiding you, Claire, not because I was ashamed of you, but because I am a monster who is hunted every single hour of his waking life. The men who want my head would have skinned you alive to break me. I thought if they believed you were just a hired secretary, an ordinary companion who meant nothing, you would be safe. But the night Sophia walked in, I realized my entire logic was poisoned by cowardice. I was playing a childish game, trying to convince myself I wasn't bound by love, because loving you made me weak. Terrified. Human."" He took a hesitant half-step toward me, his voice cracking. ""And in trying to keep you safe, I became the very thing that destroyed you.""
