Chapter 6 - The Council Of Blood

The top floor of the prestigious Blackstone Financial Tower was an arena of whispered executions and multi-million-dollar betrayals. The massive boardroom was insulated with soundproof glass, overlooking the sprawling, gray skyline of Chicago and the freezing expanse of Lake Michigan. Around the polished mahogany table sat seven elderly, ruthless men who controlled the city's ports, union halls, and underground distribution networks. At the head of the table sat Richard Reynolds, an imposing patriarch with cold blue eyes, smirking as he shuffled a stack of formal restructuring documents.
Alexander sat alone at the opposite end of the massive table. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, but the purple shadows beneath his sunken eyes and the hollow set of his sharp cheekbones betrayed days of sleepless torment. His hands rested flat on the polished wood, completely still, devoid of weapons, bodyguards, or legal advisors. He was a lion who had deliberately walked into a cage, waiting for the hunters to draw their knives.
""The terms are remarkably simple, Alexander,"" Richard Reynolds spoke, his voice carrying the oily smooth confidence of a man holding all the aces. ""You have disgraced my daughter, disrupted our maritime agreements, and exposed this commission to unnecessary federal scrutiny. Worse, rumors abound that you have fathered a bastard child with an obscure, low-born runaway who humiliated you publicly. You have shown personal weakness. Sign over your distribution rights to the Marcone family, step down as chairman, and we will permit you to retire to your estate in Tuscany without bloodshed.""
Alexander’s lips curled into a faint, bitter smirk, though his eyes remained utterly dead. ""You talk a great deal for a man who needed six bodyguards just to ride an elevator with me, Richard. We both know you don't intend to let me board a plane to Tuscany. The marksmen on the adjacent rooftop aren't here for negotiations.""
""Then you know your time is up,"" Reynolds snapped, nodding toward two armed enforcers standing near the heavy double doors. ""Sign the transfer documents, or this room becomes a slaughterhouse.""
Before the guards could take a single step forward, the heavy oak boardroom doors burst open with a resounding boom that rattled the crystal glassware.
Every single head at the table snapped toward the entrance. Armed guards instinctively reached beneath their tailored jackets, but froze in absolute bewilderment at the figure standing in the doorway.
I walked into the boardroom with my chin held high, wearing a tailored navy wool dress that proudly framed my seven-month belly. Nathan flanked my right side, holding a leather briefcase, while four of the city's most terrifying veteran enforcers stood behind us like impenetrable walls of muscle. I did not look like a frightened suburban captive; I walked across the plush carpeting with the poise of an empress who had arrived to inspect her subjects.
Alexander shot out of his chair so violently it tumbled backward onto the floor with a heavy thud. The dead, empty hollow in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror—not for his life, but for mine. ""Claire!"" he roared, panic shredding his composure. ""Nathan, what have you done?! Get her out of here! Now!""

""Sit down, Alexander,"" I commanded, my voice echoing across the silent boardroom with absolute authority.
For the first time in the recorded history of Chicago's underworld, Alexander Moretti, the feared scourge of the Midwest, blinked in dumbfounded silence—and slowly pulled his chair upright, remaining standing, his gaze anchored to me in helpless reverence.
