Chapter 5 - A Dangerous Alliance

Clara stared at the sleek medical case on the desk, the heavy weight of reality pressing down on her shoulders. She could walk out right now, preserve her fierce independence, and return to scraping together every single penny, worrying day and night whether she could afford Maya's next prescription. Or she could accept help from the most dangerous man in New York, entering a labyrinth of crime and power from which there might be no escape.
"There's always a catch with guys like you," Clara said bitterly, her arms still crossed. "What do you want in return? My soul? My loyalty? Do you want me to launder money through the Obsidian Lounge?"
Lorenzo chuckled softly, walking back to his chair and sitting down with effortless grace. "Keep your dramatic fantasies, Clara. I don't need a waitress to launder my money. I have entire financial institutions for that."
"Then what is it?"
"An experiment," Lorenzo said smoothly, resting his chin on his interlocked fingers. "I need someone who isn't afraid to tell me the truth. Someone who looks at my empire and sees a man instead of a monster. You will keep your job at the lounge—if you want it—and your sister's medical supplies will be fully taken care of, no questions asked. In exchange, you will join me for dinner once a week at a neutral location of your choosing. No bodyguards hovering, no mafia business. Just conversation."
Clara blinked in sheer disbelief. "You brought me here, kidnapped me essentially, just because you want a dinner companion who won't kiss your feet?"
"Precisely," Lorenzo said with a faint smirk. "You'd be amazed at how boring sycophants are."
"And if I say no?"
"Then you walk out that door right now," Lorenzo replied, gesturing toward the exit, "and your sister gets her standard, overpriced pharmacy insulin tomorrow morning just like you planned. But I think we both know how tired you are of running on empty."
The silence in the room was deafening. Clara swallowed hard, her pride warring fiercely with her love for Maya. Slowly, she stepped forward, closed the medical case, and picked it up by its handle. It felt heavy, solid, and entirely life-changing.

"One dinner a week," Clara said, her eyes narrowing. "And if you try anything shady, I will hit you over the head with a bottle of sparkling water."
Lorenzo’s smile widened, genuine and striking. "It's a deal, Clara."
