Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Clara stepped forward, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides. "Stay away from my sister. If you or your thugs go anywhere near Maya, I swear to God—"

"Save the heroics, Clara," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling command that brooked no argument. "You think you're the only one in this city who knows what it's like to struggle in the dark? You think power is just about suits and money? It's about protection."

Before Clara could fire back another sharp retort, the heavy mahogany door swung open again. Silas walked back inside, carrying a sleek, temperature-controlled medical case. He placed it carefully on the edge of the desk and unlocked it with a thumbprint scanner. Inside lay rows of high-grade, premium insulin vials and advanced continuous glucose monitors—supplies far superior and longer-lasting than anything Clara could ever afford at her local pharmacy.

"This batch is imported directly from Switzerland," Lorenzo said calmly, walking around the desk. "It's temperature-regulated, pharmaceutical-grade, and entirely unavailable through normal insurance channels in your neighborhood. It will cover your sister's needs for the next six months."

Clara stared at the medical case, her breath catching in her throat. Every maternal, protective instinct she possessed clashed violently with her fierce pride. She wanted to slap the smug expression off his face, but the reality of Maya’s fragile health chained her to the spot.

"Why?" Clara whispered, her voice losing its defiant edge, replaced by raw, defensive vulnerability. "Why do this? You don't know me. You're a criminal kingpin, and I'm just a tired waitress who insulted you."

"Because," Lorenzo said, stepping closer until she could see the complex flecks of gold hidden within his dark steel eyes, "in a world full of people who lie to my face, bow, and scrape for my favor, you looked at me like I was an inconvenience. It amused me at first. But now? Now I find myself wanting to see what else you won't back down from."

May you like

"I'm not your entertainment, Mr. Moretti," she hissed.

"No," Lorenzo replied quietly, leaning down just enough to meet her gaze levelly. "You're an investment."
