Chapter 1 - The Dragon's Cage

The tinted windows of the matte-black Cadillac Escalade framed the blur of rain-streaked neon lights as the vehicle sped deeper into the heart of Manhattan. Clara Vance sat stiffly in the plush leather interior, her arms crossed over her chest. The leather smelled faintly of expensive cologne and ozone, a stark contrast to the damp, chemical scent of the Obsidian Lounge back alley. Beside her sat Silas, the stoic head of security, his hand resting casually near his jacket pocket where a weapon was undoubtedly concealed.

Clara refused to look intimidated. Beneath the exterior of an exhausted, overworked waitress, a fiery determination kept her steady. She had survived too much—fostering her younger sister Maya through brutal winters, juggling three jobs, and dodging greedy landlords—to crumble just because a glorified criminal in a Brioni suit wanted to stroke his massive ego.

"Mr. Moretti appreciates punctuality," Silas said, breaking the heavy silence as the vehicle slowed down before a pair of towering wrought-iron gates. The gates parted smoothly, revealing a sprawling, ultra-modern glass and limestone fortress hidden away in a private estate overlooking the Hudson River.

"Tell your boss his timing sucks," Clara shot back without missing a beat, her voice sharp. "Some people have actual responsibilities, unlike men who play dress-up in tailored suits and terrorize city blocks."

Silas didn't smile, but a brief twitch of amusement crossed his jaw before he masked it with professional coldness. "Save the sass, Miss Vance. You're going to need all the composure you have once you step inside."

The Escalade glided to a halt under a grand stone portico. Before Silas could reach for the handle, Clara pushed the door open herself, stepping out into the cold drizzle. She adjusted her wet cardigan, tilted her chin up defiantly, and marched toward the towering double doors of the mansion as if she owned the place. If Lorenzo Moretti wanted a game, she was going to make sure he realized he had picked the wrong opponent.
