Chapter 3 - The Ultimatum

Lorenzo set his whiskey glass down on a sleek glass desk with a sharp clink. He walked toward her, closing the distance with the slow, deliberate pace of a wolf stalking an unyielding prey. Clara stood her ground, refusing to take even a single step back, though every survival instinct in her body screamed at her to flee.

"In the last ten years," Lorenzo murmured, stopping just inches away from her, "not a single human being in this city has dared to turn their back on me. Let alone lecture me about a drop of water."

"Well, congratulations on meeting your first honest person," Clara replied, her voice steady despite the overwhelming scent of sandalwood and pure authority radiating off him. "Maybe if you spent less time pouting in VIP lounges and more time looking at reality, you'd realize the world doesn't stop spinning just because you snap your fingers."

Silence stretched between them, thick and electric. Silas, lingering near the door, held his breath, expecting his boss to erupt in legendary fury. Lorenzo’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek.

Then, unexpectedly, Lorenzo let out a short, dark laugh that held genuine surprise.

"You're fearless, or completely suicidal," Lorenzo said, his gaze scanning her face with intense fascination. "Which is it?"

"Neither. I'm practical," Clara shot back, finally letting her exhaustion peek through her armor. "And right now, my practicality is screaming at me that I have twenty minutes to get back across town before my sixteen-year-old sister misses her insulin dose. So if you're not going to charge me with a crime—because, last I checked, ignoring rude customers isn't illegal—I'd like to leave."

At the mention of her sister and insulin, something shifted in Lorenzo’s steel eyes. The predatory dominance receded for a fraction of a second, replaced by a calculating sharpness. He walked back to his desk, picked up his phone, and tapped the screen twice.

"Silas," Lorenzo commanded without looking up. "Bring the medical courier bag from my private vault. Immediately."

Clara frowned, suspicion flooding her veins. "What are you doing?"

"Saving your sister's life," Lorenzo said smoothly, looking back up at her. "And changing the terms of your employment."
