Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

""Wait! Alessandro, wait!"" Vittorio gasped, his face twisted in blinding pain as he clutched his shattered wrist against his chest. Sweat poured down his temples, mingling with the soot and pulverized glass covering the warehouse floor. ""If you kill me, the commission will declare war! You cannot execute a blood cousin without a trial before the elders!""

Alessandro’s grip on the rifle didn't waver by a millimeter. His eyes were cold, dead stones. ""The commission already knows, Vittorio. While you were sitting here playing the grand strategist, my secondary team stormed your private villa in Long Island. We recovered your encrypted communications with the Chicago syndicate. You were selling our distribution lines to rival families for forty pieces of silver. You aren't just a kidnapper—you’re a traitor to the five families. The council signed your death warrant two hours ago.""

Vittorio’s face went chalk-white. All the arrogance, all the smug superiority that had carried him through decades of underworld intrigue, collapsed into pathetic, naked terror. ""Alessandro... please. We grew up together. For the family... spare me.""

""The family died the day you threatened an infant,"" Alessandro whispered coldly.

""Alessandro! Don't do it!""

Rebecca’s voice cut through the smell of cordite and burning magnesium. She stepped out from behind the shipping crate, her clothes covered in dust, her face pale but her eyes clear and resolute. Alessandro froze, his finger resting lightly on the hair-trigger of the rifle, his eyes darting toward her.

""Rebecca, stay back,"" Alessandro warned, his breathing heavy. ""This is underworld business. This man tried to destroy everything we are. He deserves to die like a dog on this floor.""

""If you pull that trigger in cold blood right in front of me, you become the exact monster he wanted you to be,"" Rebecca said, her voice echoing clearly in the vast, ruined room. ""You claim you want to protect your daughter, Alessandro. You claim you want to atone for what you broke. Do you want her first legacy to be a bloody execution carried out in her name? Hand him to the federal authorities. Use the evidence of his treason and interstate kidnapping to put him in a maximum-security penitentiary for the rest of his miserable life. Let him rot in an eight-by-ten concrete box, forgotten by the world.""

Alessandro stared at his wife. The sheer moral weight of her presence seemed to arrest the violent storm raging inside his chest. He looked down at Vittorio, who was trembling like a cornered rat, stripped of all dignity and power. Slowly, deliberately, Alessandro lowered the rifle.

He raised his hand and whistled sharply. Two of his tactical operatives moved forward immediately, hauling Vittorio roughly to his feet and securing his arms in heavy steel cuffs. ""Deliver him to the FBI field office in Newark,"" Alessandro ordered, his voice flat. ""Hand them the encrypted files from his villa along with the surveillance footage of this entire kidnapping. Ensure he is charged under the federal RICO statutes. He will never see the sunlight again.""

As the operatives dragged the sobbing Vittorio into the darkness, Alessandro turned to Rebecca. He took two hesitant steps toward her, his body trembling with the adrenaline of combat, his face raw with unspoken emotion. ""Camille and the baby are safe, Rebecca. My delta team extracted them from the upstate house twenty minutes ago without a single casualty. They are currently at Mount Sinai Hospital undergoing medical checks. The baby is completely unharmed.""

Rebecca let out a long, shuddering sob, the immense tension that had held her together finally shattering. She covered her face with her trembling hands, her knees buckling beneath her.

Alessandro moved instantly, catching her before she could strike the cold floor. He pulled her against his chest, his arms wrapping around her in a desperate, protective embrace. ""I’m sorry,"" he whispered into her hair, his tears finally falling hot and fast against her temple. ""I am so sorry, Rebecca. For every lie. For every ounce of pain I brought into your life. I swear to you on my soul, it’s over.""

Rebecca leaned against him for one fleeting second, drawing strength from the familiar warmth she had known for seven years, before she gently, decisively, pushed him away. She looked up into his gray eyes, her voice steady and clear. ""Take me to the hospital, Alessandro. I need to see the baby.""
