Chapter 2 - Cold Shadows and Bloody Whispers

The safe haven Rebecca sought was a modest brownstone in Brooklyn where her younger sister, Clara, lived on the third floor. Clara was an architect, living a life completely divorced from the dark underworld of organized crime that Rebecca had inadvertently married into. When Rebecca knocked on the door at midnight, drenched in rain and shivering from an emotional exhaustion that ran straight to the bone, Clara didn't ask questions. She simply pulled Rebecca inside, wrapped her in a thick wool blanket, and brewed a mug of chamomile tea while Rebecca wept until her throat was raw.

""He had a child with someone else, Clara,"" Rebecca whispered, staring into the rising steam as the grandfather clock in the hallway ticked away the miserable hours. ""A beautiful little girl with his eyes. And I held the camera. I took the photos for their family album.""

Clara sat beside her on the worn sofa, holding her hands tightly, her eyes burning with fiery indignation. ""Then he is dead to us, Becca. You pack whatever remains of your life, you hire the sharpest divorce attorney in New York State, and you take every single penny he kept in those legitimate holding companies. He doesn't deserve your tears. He doesn't deserve your silence.""

By dawn, the immediate numbness of betrayal had hardened into a sharp, terrifying clarity. Rebecca refused to be the weeping, tragic wife who faded into the background while powerful men carved up their empires. She drove to her photography studio early in the morning, intending to secure her business records and client files before Alessandro could attempt to freeze her accounts or send his associates to intervene. The studio had always been her private sanctuary—the only piece of her identity that the Romano name hadn't swallowed whole.

However, as she turned the corner onto the cobblestone street in SoHo, she immediately knew something was horribly wrong. The wrought-iron gate protecting the front entrance hung open, its heavy padlock severed on the sidewalk. Rebecca’s heart slammed against her ribs. She sprinted toward the door, ignoring the chilling morning wind, and stepped inside to a scene of absolute devastation.

The seamless white backdrops were slashed to ribbons. Her vintage camera collection, painstakingly assembled over twelve years, lay smashed into fragments across the hardwood floor. The digital storage lockers had been completely pried open, hard drives ripped violently from their bays and smashed beneath heavy boots. In the center of the destruction, pinned to the studio’s white brick wall with an antique hunting dagger, was an enlarged photograph of Rebecca herself, taken from a magazine interview she had done three years prior. Her eyes in the photograph were aggressively crossed out with red spray paint. Beneath it, scrawled in jagged, dripping letters, was a single sentence: A disloyal wife is an expensive liability.

A chill deeper than winter gripped her spine. This wasn't Alessandro’s signature; her husband was ruthless, but he operated with cold, surgical precision, never senseless vandalism. This bore the theatrical cruelty of Vittorio Romano. Vittorio wasn't merely tracking Camille; he was actively terrorizing Rebecca to send a message to Alessandro.

Before she could reach into her coat for her phone to call the police, a deep, raspy voice drifted from the darkened dressing room where Camille had fed her baby yesterday afternoon. ""It’s a shame about the lighting in here, Mrs. Romano. I hear you were quite the artist.""

A man stepped out from the shadows. He was broad-shouldered, wearing a heavy overcoat, his face etched with old scars and his cold eyes completely devoid of warmth. Two younger men flanked him, their hands buried deliberately inside their leather jackets. It was Marco, Vittorio Romano’s chief enforcer.

""Don't move, Mrs. Romano,"" Marco said calmly, his hand coming out of his coat holding a suppressed pistol. ""Vittorio sends his regards. He thinks it’s high time the boss’s wife had a private sit-down with the real head of the family.""
