Chapter 7 - The Lion's Den

The damp air of the New Jersey shoreline smelled of sulfur, rotting timber, and impending violence. Marco led Rebecca back into the cavernous warehouse at Pier 42, his heavy hand pressed firmly against the small of her back. The yellow incandescent bulbs cast grotesque, elongated shadows across the towering stacks of shipping containers. Vittorio sat exactly where she had left him, a silver cigar cutter resting beside his untouched espresso cup.

""Right on time, Mrs. Romano,"" Vittorio drawled, rising from his seat and buttoning his tailored jacket. ""I must confess, I had my doubts. Women of your social standing usually succumb to hysterical bouts of weeping when faced with the realities of our world. You’ve shown remarkable composure.""

""I brought what you asked for,"" Rebecca said coldly, holding up the sleek black titanium drive between her thumb and forefinger. She refused to let her hand shake, though her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. ""Now release the live feed. I want to see Camille and the baby walk out of that upstate safe house before this leaves my hand.""

Vittorio chuckled, a sinister, patronizing sound that echoed off the metal rafters. He reached out his hand, palm up. ""You don't dictate the terms of this exchange, Rebecca. In this room, you are merely a courier. Give me the drive, and perhaps I’ll let you leave without a bullet in your spine.""

Rebecca didn't flinch. She took one step backward, angling her body so that she stood directly beside a massive wooden crate of heavy industrial hardware. ""If you shoot me, Vittorio, this drive drops between the floorboard grating into the bay beneath us. It’s weighted with depleted lead shielding; it will sink straight to the riverbed. You’ll never crack Alessandro's accounts, and the council will execute you for unauthorized treason against the boss.""

Vittorio’s eyes darkened, the polished aristocratic facade instantly peeling away to reveal the feral animal underneath. He signaled to Marco, who drew his weapon and leveled it at Rebecca’s chest. ""You think you’re clever, little girl? You think playing games with me changes the outcome? Marco, take the drive from her. If she resists, break her fingers one by one.""

Marco took a step forward, his cruel grin widening. But before his hand could reach Rebecca’s wrist, the warehouse was suddenly plunged into pitch-black darkness.

The heavy thrum of the industrial generators cut out instantly. High above in the rafters, the sudden, deafening crack of shattering skylight glass rained down like lethal hail. Flashbang grenades detonated simultaneously in three corners of the vast room, unleashing blinding white magnesium flares and earsplitting concussive blasts that echoed like thunderclaps.

Marco screamed in agony, clutching his blinded eyes as his weapon fired blindly into the ceiling rafters. Vittorio dropped behind the folding table, cursing violently in Italian as he pulled an automatic pistol from his shoulder holster.

""Romano strike team! Drop your weapons!"" a thunderous voice roared through the blinding smoke.

Rebecca didn't wait to be caught in the crossfire. She dropped instantly to the cold concrete, rolling beneath the heavy wooden overhang of the shipping crate just as automatic gunfire erupted across the warehouse. Red and green tracer rounds tore through the darkness, illuminating the chaotic battlefield in terrifying strobes of light.

Alessandro emerged from the shadows like a wraith born of vengeance. Dressed in tactical black armor, his eyes burning with an unholy fury, he moved with lethal, terrifying speed. A single suppressed shot took down Marco before the enforcer could recover his vision. Two more of Vittorio’s guards fell before they could raise their rifles.

Alessandro didn't stop. He kicked the heavy folding table aside, sending Vittorio sprawling across the cracked cement. Before Vittorio could raise his weapon, Alessandro’s heavy combat boot came down violently on his cousin’s wrist, snapping the bone with an audible crack and sending the pistol skittering across the floor.

Alessandro leaned down, pressing the smoking barrel of his rifle directly against Vittorio’s forehead. ""You touched my wife, Vittorio,"" Alessandro snarled, his voice vibrating with absolute, unchecked savagery. ""You put a gun to my newborn daughter. For ten years, I showed you mercy because our fathers were brothers. That mercy ends tonight.""
