Chapter 6 - A Pact Forged in Fire

Alessandro motioned sharply with his hand, and the terrified lieutenant scrambled to his feet, bowing his head before rushing out of the library like a condemned man granted a sudden reprieve. The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving husband and wife standing alone in the massive room surrounded by thousands of leather-bound books and cold, buried secrets.

""What did he do to you?"" Alessandro asked, his voice cracking as he stepped forward, his eyes taking in the deep bruises on her wrists and the pale exhaustion on her face. He reached out to touch her cheek, but Rebecca stepped back, her gaze hard and impenetrable.

""Do not touch me, Alessandro,"" she said, her tone devoid of warmth. ""We are not a husband and wife reuniting. We are two people whose mutual enemies are threatening an innocent newborn child. Vittorio took me to an industrial warehouse on the New Jersey docks. He has Camille and your baby on a live video feed. If I don't walk out of this building in ten minutes with the encrypted ledger from your library vault, they will murder them both.""

Alessandro’s face drained of color, his jaw setting into a line of pure granite. ""The ledger... Vittorio wants the family finances. He wants the offshore accounts I set aside.""

""He wants the evidence of your embezzlement so he can turn the five families against you and execute you with the council's blessing,"" Rebecca clarified bluntly. ""He thought I would betray you out of spite. He thought my hatred for Camille would make me blind to his cruelty.""

Alessandro looked at her, a profound mixture of shame, awe, and heartbreak flashing across his features. ""Rebecca... after what I did to you, after the unforgivable lies I lived for over a year... why would you help save Camille and that child?""

Rebecca stood tall, looking directly into the eyes of the man she had loved for seven years. ""Because that baby didn't choose to be born into your web of deceit, Alessandro. She didn't ask for a father who lives by the gun, or a mother who covets another woman's husband. She is innocent. And unlike you, I do not abandon innocent people when the cost of protecting them becomes inconvenient.""

The words struck Alessandro harder than any bullet ever could. He dropped his gaze, his broad shoulders visibly slumping beneath the weight of her judgment. ""You’re right. God, you are so much better than me. Tell me what we do.""

""Vittorio has Marco waiting in an SUV downstairs,"" Rebecca explained quickly, pulling her phone from her pocket. ""Marco is tracking my time. We cannot take the ledger—giving Vittorio that evidence guarantees our executions the moment the trade is made. Instead, we use your private security network. I have an encrypted audio feed running on my phone right now that I set up before I entered this room. I know the exact warehouse where they held me. It’s Pier 42 in Bayonne, behind the abandoned sugar refinery.""

Alessandro’s tactical instincts immediately roared back to life. He walked swiftly behind the large portrait of Rebecca that hung over the fireplace—the portrait she had painted herself during their first year of marriage. He entered the complex passcode and pressed his thumb to the scanner. The heavy steel door popped open with a hiss of pneumatic pressure. Inside sat the black titanium drive containing the syndicate's master files. Beside it, however, lay a second, identical drive.

""A decoy,"" Alessandro said, holding up the second drive. ""It contains a self-replicating military-grade trojan. The moment Vittorio inserts this into any terminal, it completely bricks the hardware, wipes all local drives, and broadcasts the machine’s precise IP and GPS coordinates to federal monitoring networks.""

""Take it,"" Rebecca said. ""I walk down to Marco with the decoy. You mobilize your assault team and take the docks from the water side. Bayonne Pier 42 has access from the Newark Bay shipping channel. You cut their communications from behind. But Camille and the baby must be secured before a single shot is fired.""

Alessandro gripped the drive, then looked up at Rebecca with an intensity that burned with desperate longing. ""Rebecca... if we survive this... will you let me atone? Will you let me spend the rest of my life making this right?""

Rebecca looked at him with an expression of quiet finality. ""Let’s save that little girl first, Alessandro. Then we’ll see if anything of your life is worth saving at all.""
