Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail

Mason stood tall in the doorway. He was wearing clean, simple clothes Henry had bought for him during their brief layover—a crisp navy sweater and dark trousers. He didn't look like the terrified runaway who had been pushed through security at Logan Airport twenty-four hours earlier. He stood with his shoulders squared, his hazel eyes locking onto Arthur Vance with cold, absolute certainty.
""Good afternoon, Mr. Vance,"" Mason said clearly.
Vance sprang to his feet, knocking his leather portfolio onto the floor. Papers scattered across the carpet. ""This is an outrage! Henry, this boy is trespassing on private corporate property! He is an extortionist who has been harassing Claire's memory!""
""Shut your mouth, Arthur,"" Henry said, his tone carrying the weight of a sledgehammer.
The Justice Department attorney stepped forward, dropping a thick, blue-backed legal document in front of Vance.
""Arthur Vance,"" the attorney stated formally. ""You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, interstate transport of stolen property, forgery of legal instruments, and grand larceny. Federal agents executed a search warrant on your Beacon Hill townhouse three hours ago. We recovered the original, unamended last will and testament of Claire Boucher Whitman from your private safe.""
Vance’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the conference table to keep from collapsing. ""Henry... listen to me. I was protecting you! I was protecting the Whitman name! Claire was a nobody! She grew up in squalor! If the press found out about her family, about her deadbeat sister, about this orphan boy—the Whitman stock would have plunged! The board would have questioned your judgment!""
""You didn't care about my stock, Arthur,"" Henry said, rising slowly from his chair and walking toward the trembling lawyer. ""You saw a grieving widower, an innocent baby, and a helpless orphan boy, and you saw an opportunity to steal five million dollars without anyone asking questions. You thought Mason had nobody to fight for him.""
Henry stepped directly into Vance’s personal space. The billionaire was taller, broader, and radiating a fury that filled the entire executive suite.
""You forgot one thing, Arthur,"" Henry whispered harshly. ""Claire chose me because I protect what belongs to me. And this boy belongs to my family.""
The federal marshals stepped forward, clicking metal handcuffs around Vance’s wrists. The high-powered attorney, who had spent decades destroying others with legal loopholes and intimidation, was led out of the boardroom in shame, his head bowed, weeping quietly as the security team escorted him toward the elevators and the waiting squad cars below.
When the doors shut, the room returned to absolute stillness.
Marcus nodded to Henry. ""The assets in the Cayman account have already been frozen, Mr. Whitman. Every dollar will be restored to Claire’s legitimate trust within forty-eight hours.""
""Thank you, Marcus. Take the rest of the day off.""
Marcus and the federal attorney exited, leaving Henry and Mason alone in the massive glass room overlooking the city.

Mason looked around at the towering skyscrapers and the luxury surrounding them, then down at his hands. ""It's really over, isn't it?""
""No,"" Henry replied, walking over and resting a hand on his nephew’s shoulder. ""The nightmare is over, Mason. But your life is just beginning.""
