Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Boardroom

Twenty-four hours later, the mahogany-paneled boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Whitman Tower in downtown Boston was silent. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gray expanse of Boston Harbor.

Arthur Vance sat at the head of the conference table, meticulously organizing a leather folder of legal documents. At fifty-two, Vance was the epitome of polished corporate arrogance: silver hair combed back perfectly, bespoke Italian suit, gold cufflinks catching the recessed ceiling lights. He looked completely at ease. He believed Mason Brooks was currently locked inside an intake room at an alpine reform school in Switzerland, completely cut off from the world.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Henry Whitman walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored tie; his collar was open, his dark coat damp with rain. He looked tired, but his eyes carried an intensity that made Vance instinctively sit up straighter.

""Henry,"" Vance said smoothly, rising with an outstretched hand and an expression of practiced sympathy. ""I was shocked when your assistant said you aborted the Zurich summit. Are you feeling alright? How is little Nora doing?""

Henry didn't take the offered hand. He walked to the opposite end of the forty-foot table and sat down, leaning back in the executive leather chair.

""Nora is doing remarkably well, Arthur,"" Henry said calmly. ""Better than expected, actually. She finally stopped crying.""

Vance smiled thinly. ""I told you, Henry. Newborns are resilient. You simply need the right medical team in place. Give it a few months, and routine will restore order to your life.""

""Speaking of routine,"" Henry said, tapping his fingers against the polished wood, ""I was reviewing Claire’s personal estate filings this morning. Specifically, the philanthropic trusts linked to her maiden name.""

Vance’s smile didn't falter, but a microscopic twitch appeared beneath his left eye. ""Her estate is fully settled, Henry. As your counsel, I ensured that all extraneous liabilities and charitable commitments were resolved cleanly so you wouldn't have to endure the emotional burden during your mourning.""

""That was very thoughtful of you, Arthur,"" Henry said softly. ""Especially considering the extraneous liability named Mason Brooks.""

The temperature in the room plummeted.

Vance’s hands froze over his leather folder. The color drained from his face, leaving his skin the shade of wet parchment. He tried to let out a short, dismissive chuckle, but it caught in his throat.

""Mason Brooks?"" Vance managed to say, his voice strained. ""Henry... where did you hear that name? Did someone contact you? I warned you that scammers and opportunists would emerge from the woodwork after Claire's passing. If some boy is claiming—""

""He didn't contact me,"" Henry interrupted, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. ""He caught Nora when she was falling apart. On my plane. While you were sitting in your office counting five million dollars of Claire’s stolen money.""

Henry hit a button on the conference console.

The double doors opened once more. Marcus Cole entered, flanked by two armed federal marshals and an attorney from the United States Department of Justice. And right behind them walked Mason Brooks.
