Chapter 6 - Touchdown in Zurich

The heavy wheels of the private charter slammed onto the tarmac at Zurich Airport with a muted thud, kicking up spray from the slick runway. As the aircraft taxied toward a secluded private hangar rather than the main commercial terminal, Henry stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. His exhaustion from earlier had burned away, replaced by an iron resolve.
He looked over at Mason, who was holding Nora with practiced ease while Henry gathered their travel documents.
""We aren't going to the hotel,"" Henry told him. ""We’re refueling the plane, transferring our flight clearance, and heading straight back to Boston.""
Mason looked puzzled. ""Back to Boston? Didn't you have meetings here?""
""I was supposed to finalize an acquisition of a Swiss medical logistics firm,"" Henry said dismissively. ""My deputy can handle the preliminary signatures. My family comes first. And right now, there's a rat in our home.""
Henry’s phone buzzed with an incoming encrypted dossier from Marcus Cole. Henry unlocked the screen and scrolled through the high-resolution scans of financial transfers. As he suspected, Arthur Vance hadn't waited. The moment Claire had been declared dead, Vance had activated a dormant power of attorney document—one that bore a forged signature of Claire Whitman dated three days before she gave birth. Through that document, Vance had redirected five million dollars from Claire's private account into an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.
More damning, however, was a second document Marcus had uncovered from Vance’s encrypted personal cloud: the real, legally binding will that Claire had drafted with an independent attorney six weeks before her passing.
Henry read the lines on his screen, his throat tightening:
“To my nephew, Mason Brooks, who gave me hope when I thought my past had broken me beyond repair, I leave full legal recognition as my son in spirit, alongside half of my personal independent estate. To my husband, Henry, I leave my heart, my daughter, and the truth. Do not be angry with me for hiding my scars. Love Mason as you love me, and you will find that our family was never broken—only waiting to be found.”
Henry handed the phone to Mason. ""Read that.""
Mason stared at the glowing screen. As his eyes tracked down the legal phrasing, the weight of the last three weeks finally seemed to lift from his young shoulders. Tears dripped unchecked onto the glass. Claire hadn't abandoned him. She hadn't let him be thrown to the wolves. She had put everything in writing, trusting that justice would somehow find its way to him.
""She... she really left this?"" Mason choked out.
""She did,"" Henry said, taking Nora gently into his own arms, holding his daughter close against his chest. ""Arthur Vance stole it from you. He thought you were just an ignorant kid from New Hampshire who would disappear without a fight. He thought I was too blinded by grief to notice. But he made one critical mistake.""

""What's that?"" Mason asked, wiping his eyes.
Henry looked down at Nora, then met Mason’s gaze with a fierce, unwavering pride. ""He didn't realize that Claire’s blood runs through your veins. Let’s go home and settle the score.""
