Chapter 3 - The Secret Apartment in Brookline

The flight attendants served breakfast as the sun began to break over the clouds, casting brilliant streaks of gold and rose across the cabin ceiling. Neither Henry nor Mason touched the plates placed in front of them. Nora woke up around dawn, hungry and fussing, but this time Henry didn't panic. Under Mason’s quiet, patient guidance, Henry warmed the formula bottle and held Nora at the angle Mason suggested.
When Nora drank greedily and settled back down without a tear, Henry felt a heavy lump in his throat. He had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars hiring the most decorated pediatric nurses in New England, yet it was this teenager in second-hand clothes who held the key to his daughter’s comfort.
""She visited you,"" Henry said, his mind furiously rewinding the past three years. ""All those Tuesday afternoons. She told me she was volunteering at the Boston Children's Hospital foundation board.""
""She was,"" Mason said. ""She did that for two hours, and then she came to Brookline. She rented a small, two-bedroom apartment near the train line. That’s where I lived.""
""She set you up in an apartment?""
""She put me through high school,"" Mason explained, his fingers tracing the frayed hem of his jeans. ""She bought my clothes, paid for my tutors, bought my groceries. Every Tuesday and Thursday, she would come over. She’d take off her expensive jewelry, put on an apron, and teach me how to cook. She helped me with my geometry homework. She told me stories about how hard it was to fit into your world, how she felt like an imposter at those fancy dinners, but how much she truly, deeply loved you.""
Henry looked away, a sharp burning behind his eyelids. He remembered Claire coming home on Tuesday evenings, smelling faintly of lemon cleaner and garlic pasta, smiling with an exhaustion he had always attributed to hospital board politics. She would collapse into his arms on the sofa, holding him a little tighter than usual, whispering that she just needed to feel grounded.
""She wanted to tell you,"" Mason said softly, noticing the older man's pain. ""When she found out she was pregnant with Nora, she told me that the lies had to stop. She said that a child couldn't grow up surrounded by secrets. She told me, 'On Nora’s first month birthday, I’m bringing Henry to the Brookline apartment. I’m going to introduce him to his nephew, and we are going to become a real family.'""
Mason’s voice choked up, and he swallowed hard before continuing.
""She went into labor two weeks early. The complications started right after delivery. I was waiting at the Brookline apartment for her text, checking my phone every five minutes. Then two days later, I saw the breaking news notification on my phone. 'Philanthropist Claire Whitman, Wife of Tech Billionaire Henry Whitman, Dies at 34.'""
A tear finally escaped Mason’s eye, trailing down his young cheek. He wiped it away furiously with the back of his hand, embarrassed to show vulnerability in front of the formidable man across from him.
""I sat in that apartment for three days,"" Mason whispered. ""I couldn't even go to her funeral. There were security guards and barricades around the cathedral. There were photographers everywhere. I stood across the street behind the police tape in the rain, watching you carry her casket out to the hearse. You looked like you were already dead yourself.""
Henry remembered that day only as a blur of black umbrellas and crippling numbness. He had felt completely alone in that massive church, surrounded by hundreds of executives, politicians, and socialites who knew Claire only as an elegant ornament to his wealth. To realize that her true family had been standing outside in the freezing rain, locked behind barricades, cut Henry deeper than any failure he had ever endured.

""And when the funeral was over?"" Henry asked quietly. ""What happened to the apartment?""
Mason’s expression turned guarded, a shadow of fear crossing his eyes. ""That’s why I’m on this plane, Mr. Whitman. That’s where the real nightmare started.""
