Chapter 9 - The Trial by Fire

Securing the boardroom was one thing; cleaning out the remnants of Vance’s loyalists on the streets of Boston was another.
Julian Vance’s younger brother, Damon, had fled to Montreal during the initial raid. Refusing to accept the collapse of his family's reign, Damon had mobilized a desperate, rogue faction of mercenaries. They knew they couldn't defeat Adrian in a direct confrontation, so they struck at the one asset that could paralyze the new alliance: the central dispatch terminal at the Boston South Docks.
On a cold Tuesday evening in February, alarms shrieked across the private security feeds in Adrian’s mobile command vehicle.
Damon Vance and a dozen heavily armed gunmen had seized the terminal control tower, taking eight civilian union dockworkers hostage. Their demand was broadcast directly to Adrian’s phone: Deliver Clara Valenti to the end of Pier 4 by midnight, or the hostages die, and the terminal’s diesel tanks are blown into the harbor.
In the command SUV speeding north along Interstate 95, Adrian adjusted his tactical vest, his face drawn into lethal, focused lines. Claire sat beside him, reviewing the structural blueprints of the port on an encrypted tablet.
""You're not going anywhere near that pier, Claire,"" Adrian said firmly, checking the magazine of his sidearm. ""My tactical team will breach through the water. We take them out before they even realize we're on the docks.""
""They have the terminal wired with motion sensors, Adrian,"" Claire countered, pointing to the schematics on the screen. ""My father built that specific control tower. If you breach from the water, they'll see the heat signatures on the lower pilings and detonate the diesel tanks before your men can climb the ladder. The hostages will die.""
Adrian gripped the steering wheel, his jaw clenched tight. ""I am not using you as bait.""
""I’m not bait,"" Claire said, looking at him with fierce determination. ""I am the distraction. There is an old maintenance intake tunnel behind the cold-storage unit that leads directly beneath the tower office. It isn't on the public blueprints. You take your team through the tunnel while I walk onto the pier and keep Damon talking.""
""No!"" Adrian snapped, pulling the SUV off the shoulder near the port perimeter and slamming it into park. He turned to her, his dark eyes burning with raw, unvarnished fear. ""I almost lost you on Christmas Eve, Claire. I spent four years thinking my heart was dead, buried in the ground with my wife. And then you walked into my house, and you brought me back to life. You made my daughter smile again. If anything happens to you out there—""
""Nothing will happen to me,"" Claire whispered softly, reaching out to cup his rugged cheek. Her fingers traced the sharp line of his jaw. ""Because I trust you with my life, Adrian. I know you won't let him hurt me.""
Adrian stared at her, the fierce, terrifying boss of the Harbor Circle completely undone by the faith in her eyes. Slowly, inevitably, he leaned forward, his hand sliding behind her neck, and pulled her into a deep, desperate kiss.
It was a kiss born of fire, danger, and years of unspoken longing. Claire melted against him, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, answering the fierce possession of his lips with all the love she had locked away in her heart.
When he pulled back, his breathing was ragged, his forehead resting against hers.

""You walk onto that pier,"" Adrian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. ""And you keep him talking for exactly three minutes. Not a second more. Do you hear me?""
""Three minutes,"" Claire agreed, a fearless smile touching her lips. ""Go get them, Mr. Vale.""
