Chapter 7 - Christmas Morning Truce

Adrian stood up immediately, ignoring the sharp twinge of pain in his bandaged shoulder, and knelt down to Lucy's height. He opened his good arm, and Lucy sprinted across the Persian rug, throwing herself into his embrace.

""Yes, sweetheart,"" Adrian whispered into her hair, his eyes closing as he held his child tight. ""We won the game. The bad guys are gone, and they are never coming back.""

Lucy looked over her father's shoulder, spotting the white bandages wrapped around his arm and Claire sitting by the fire. ""Daddy, your arm is hurt!""

""Just a scratch, baby. Santa’s reindeer got a little clumsy landing on the roof,"" Adrian lied with a gentle smile that Claire had never seen him wear before. It transformed his stern, intimidating face, erasing a decade of underworld cynicism.

Lucy frowned, unconvinced, then slipped from Adrian's arms and ran straight to Claire. She climbed onto the sofa, wiggling under the cashmere blanket and wrapping her small arms tightly around Claire's neck.

""You promised you wouldn't leave,"" Lucy whispered against Claire's collarbone. ""I was so scared you went away.""

Claire buried her face in Lucy’s soft blond hair, letting the tears fall freely now. ""I’m here, Lucy. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.""

Adrian stood by the hearth, watching the two of them. The tension that had defined his posture for years seemed to melt away into the warmth of the fire. He walked over to his desk, picked up a secure satellite phone, and dialed a number.

""Dominic,"" Adrian commanded into the receiver. ""Wake up our legal team and assemble the Harbor Circle council for an emergency meeting at noon. Vance’s empire in Boston is currently leaderless. I want every deed, every shipping manifest, and every bank account tied to the Valenti trust seized and legally transferred back to its rightful heir by sunset.""

Claire looked up, stunned. ""Adrian, what are you doing?""

Adrian lowered the phone, looking down at her with unwavering conviction. ""Julian Vance thought he could take what belonged to you. Tomorrow, the entire East Coast will know that the Valenti family has reclaimed its seat—not with violence, but with the full financial and operational backing of the Harbor Circle.""

""The other families won't accept a woman taking over the Boston docks,"" Claire said, shaking her head. ""They are ruthless men. They will see me as a target.""

""They won't see you as a target,"" Adrian said softly, stepping closer until he stood right beside the sofa, his eyes locked onto hers with unmistakable intensity. ""Because you won't be standing alone.""

Lucy looked between them, her eyes darting from Claire's flushed cheeks to her father's intense gaze. ""Does this mean Miss Claire gets to eat Christmas breakfast with us?""

Adrian’s mouth curved into a genuine, breathtaking smile. ""Miss Claire is having breakfast with us. And every breakfast after that, if she’ll have us.""

The sun began to peek over the snow-covered hills outside, casting a brilliant golden light through the frosted windows. The chaos of the night was buried beneath a fresh layer of morning snow. In the kitchen down the hall, the faint, comforting smell of brewing coffee and cinnamon rolls began to drift into the study. Mrs. Greer was already back at work, humming a Christmas carol as if the estate hadn't just survived an armed siege.

For the first time in eight years, Claire felt the suffocating knot in her chest untangle. The locket around her neck was no longer a heavy reminder of blood and tragedy; it was a key to a future she had never dared to dream of.
