Chapter 3 - Blood on the Snow

Claire didn't hesitate. Gathering her skirts, she sprinted up the grand staircase two steps at a time. Lucy was standing at the landing, clutching a worn stuffed rabbit, her blue eyes wide with confusion and fear.
""Miss Claire, why does Daddy have a gun?"" Lucy asked, her lip trembling.
""We're playing a game, sweetheart,"" Claire said breathless, scooping the eight-year-old into her arms despite the burning ache in her muscles. ""We have to go to your dad's room and hide until the game is over. Okay? Like hide-and-seek.""
""Daddy looked really angry,"" Lucy whispered, burying her face into Claire's shoulder as Claire carried her down the long, dim corridor to Adrian's private master suite.
Claire pushed through the double mahogany doors. She had never been allowed in this room before; cleaning staff was strictly barred from the master wing. The room was austere, painted in shades of slate grey and deep navy, dominated by a king-sized bed and a massive wall of dark walnut closets. Claire remembered the rumors among the staff about Adrian’s paranoia—a paranoia forged in the blood-soaked power struggles of the Connecticut underworld.
She found the specific wardrobe panel. Behind the hanging rows of charcoal suits was a heavy, reinforced biometric keypad and a manual mechanical wheel. Adrian had already unlocked it remotely; the green indicator light was pulsing. Claire pulled the heavy steel door open, ushered Lucy inside the small, carpeted room equipped with monitors, emergency rations, and a phone line, and pulled the door shut until the heavy deadbolts slammed into place.
On the wall monitors inside the panic room, Claire could see the entire estate through dozens of hidden night-vision cameras. Her heart seized.
Julian’s men weren't waiting. They had breached the east perimeter gate with heavy-duty winch cables attached to their trucks. Three black SUVs were currently tearing through the pristine, snow-covered lawn, tires chewing up the landscaping as they sped toward the main entrance.
Down in the great foyer, Adrian stood alone.
He had stripped off his suit jacket, wearing only a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. In his hands was a tactical assault rifle, leaning casually against his thigh as if he were waiting for a casual business guest. Behind him, emerging from the dark kitchen corridor, came Mrs. Greer. The sweet, elderly cook was holding a polished pump-action shotgun with the steady, seasoned posture of someone who had seen cartel wars before Adrian was even born.
""I told you to retire to Florida, Martha,"" Adrian said without turning his head, his voice coming through the panic room's audio feed.
""And miss your terrible Christmas dinners, Mr. Vale? Not on your life,"" the old woman replied calmly, racking a shell into the chamber. ""The front doors won't hold against their battering ram. You want them in the courtyard or the foyer?""
""Let them break the glass,"" Adrian replied coldly. ""I don't like blood on my hardwood floors.""
Suddenly, the front entryway erupted.
A thunderous explosion blew the heavy carved oak doors off their hinges, sending splinters and shards of ornate glass flying into the air. Gunfire shattered the Christmas silence, a deafening barrage of automatic rounds tearing through the festive garland and shredding the silver ornaments on the twelve-foot tree.
Claire gasped, instinctively pulling Lucy closer and covering the little girl’s ears. Lucy began to sob quietly, trembling violently against Claire’s chest.
""Shh, baby, look at me. Don't look at the screen,"" Claire whispered, tears streaming down her face as she watched the violence unfold on the monitors.
Adrian moved with lethal, horrifying precision. He wasn't just a businessman with criminal ties; he was a master tactician. Using the massive marble pillars as cover, he returned fire in controlled, surgical bursts. Two of Julian's men dropped in the snow just outside the threshold before they could even level their weapons. Mrs. Greer fired twice from the shadow of the dining room archway, her shotgun blasts echoing like thunderclaps, stopping another assailant in his tracks.
But Julian had brought an army. Half a dozen more armed men flooded through the smoking doorway, returning fire with relentless intensity. Plaster showered down from the ceilings. Priceless paintings were shredded by stray bullets. Adrian was forced back behind the staircase, his rifle running dry.
He reached for his sidearm, but as he leaned out to fire, a spray of bullets chipped the marble right by his shoulder. A sharp grunt escaped his lips, and Claire saw red bloom across the dark fabric of his upper arm.
""Adrian!"" Claire cried out, helpless behind the reinforced steel of the panic room.

Julian Vance stepped through the ruined doorway, a sadistic grin plastered across his sharp, aristocratic face. He held a customized gold-plated pistol, stepping over the bodies of his own fallen men without a second glance.
""Come out, Adrian!"" Julian shouted over the ringing silence of the shattered foyer. ""Give me the girl, and maybe I let you bleed out in peace. Keep hiding, and I'll find your daughter first!""
