Chapter 5 - The Fall of Julian Vance

The mention of Lucy shattered whatever restraint remained in the room.
Before Julian could pull the trigger, a thunderous roar erupted from the shadows beneath the staircase. Adrian launched himself like a wounded beast, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. He didn't have a loaded gun, but he had two hundred pounds of hardened, lethal muscle and an unstoppable paternal rage.
Adrian tackled Julian to the floor, the golden pistol skittering across the blood-splattered marble. The two men crashed into the base of the Christmas tree, sending the towering evergreen toppling sideways in an explosion of lights, pine needles, and shattered glass.
""Kill him!"" Julian screamed, wrestling wildly beneath Adrian's crushing grip.
Julian’s remaining two henchmen raised their automatic weapons to execute Adrian.
Claire didn't hesitate. Three years of hiding, three years of swallowing humiliation and living in terror vanished in a single microsecond. She raised the heavy stainless-steel revolver with both hands, aligned the sight with the chest of the nearest gunman, and squeezed the trigger.
BANG.
The deafening recoil kicked through her wrists. The gunman stumbled backward, clutching his chest with a look of utter shock, before collapsing heavily against the stone fireplace.
The second gunman whipped around toward Claire, raising his rifle. But Claire was already shifting her aim, her father’s voice echoing in her memory: Breathe out, center your weight, don't close your eyes.
BANG.
The second shot struck the man's shoulder, spinning him around and causing his weapon to clatter harmlessly against the floor. Before he could recover, Mrs. Greer hurled a heavy brass candlestick from across the room, striking him squarely in the temple and knocking him unconscious.
In the center of the room, the fight was brutal and short.
Julian pulled a serrated combat knife from his boot, slashing wildly at Adrian's ribs. Adrian caught Julian's wrist, the sharp blade slicing open Adrian's palm, but the billionaire didn't even flinch. He twisted Julian’s arm with a sickening crack, forcing the knife from his grip. With a guttural roar, Adrian slammed his fist into Julian’s jaw once, twice, three times, until the younger mobster went completely limp, his face a bruised and bloody mess on the snow-dusted rug.
Heavy, ragged breathing filled the room.
Adrian knelt over Julian's unconscious body, his chest heaving, his dark shirt soaked with a mixture of his own blood and his enemy's. Snow drifted in through the blown-out front entrance, swirling gently around the devastation like a mocking blanket of white peace.
Adrian slowly stood up, turning to face Claire. His eyes were wide, dark, and filled with an emotion she couldn't quite decipher. A mixture of awe, suspicion, and raw, visceral adrenaline.
Claire’s arms suddenly felt like lead. The heavy revolver slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the marble with a dull metallic clatter. Her knees buckled beneath her.
Before she could hit the ground, Adrian was there. He caught her by the waist, his strong, calloused hands pulling her against his chest. Even with the blood, even with the smell of cordite and winter air, his arms felt extraordinarily solid and safe.
""Are you hit?"" he demanded, his voice rough and ragged, his eyes scanning her body frantically. ""Claire, look at me. Did they shoot you?""
""I'm... I'm okay,"" she whispered, her voice shaking violently as shock finally set in. ""Adrian, your arm... you're bleeding so much.""
""It's just flesh,"" Adrian murmured, his forehead resting against hers for a fleeting, intimate second. His breathing gradually slowed, syncing with hers. ""You saved my life.""
""You protected me first,"" she whispered back, looking into his bruised, handsome face.
A low groan came from the floor. Julian was stirring, coughing up blood, his eyes fluttering open. He looked up at Adrian and Claire, a pathetic, bloody sneer returning to his lips.
""You think... you think you've won?"" Julian wheezed, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. ""The Port Authority... the FBI... my men in Boston... they know I came here. The moment I don't check in, Vale Holdings burns to the ground. You're finished, Adrian. Both of you are dead.""

Adrian looked down at Julian Vance with the cold, merciless detachment of an apex predator.
""You made a fatal mistake, Julian,"" Adrian said calmly, stepping over the ruined tree. ""You thought Claire was just a runaway maid. But tomorrow morning, she becomes something much more dangerous to you.""
