Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Empire

Carter turned on his wife, his face contorted in sheer rage and horror. ""You threw water on him?! You poured ice water on the man holding our entire financial life in his hands?!""
""How was I supposed to know?!"" Sienna screamed back, her polished exterior completely shattering into frantic defensiveness. ""He was dressed like the help! He was acting like a common laborer! Rich people don't spend their weekends carrying other people's golf bags!""
""I do,"" Evan said quietly. ""Because I like to remind myself of the real world. A world where people like Tess work double shifts in the heat to pay for their education, while people like you treat them like dirt simply because you have a black credit card paid for by your husband's leveraged debt.""
Evan turned a page in the portfolio. ""Let's review the audit Lena’s team concluded last night. Vail Logistics has been falsifying safety inspection logs across sixty percent of its interstate fleet to cut operating expenses. You've delayed driver pension contributions by nine months. All while withdrawing four million dollars in personal dividends last quarter to purchase your summer home in the Hamptons and pay for your country club membership.""
Carter buried his face in his hands, trembling uncontrollably. ""Please, Mr. Cole. The company employs twelve hundred drivers. If you pull the bridge loan, twelve hundred families lose their livelihoods. Don't punish them for our sins.""
""I have no intention of punishing your drivers,"" Evan replied calmly. ""Your drivers are hardworking people who deserve honest leadership. Which brings us to the terms of your survival.""
Lena slid a fresh set of documents across the table, stopping inches from Carter’s shaking hands.
""Apex Meridian will not roll over your debt,"" Lena announced. ""Instead, under Section 14 of your preliminary loan agreement, Apex will exercise its right to convert the outstanding defaulted debt into eighty-five percent controlling equity. You will step down as Chief Executive Officer immediately. You will retain a symbolic five percent non-voting stake, your personal assets used as collateral will be liquidated to fund the employee pension shortfall, and the company will be restructured under new management.""
Carter stared at the paper as if it were a death warrant. ""You're... you're taking my company. You're stripping me of everything.""
""You're not going to prison, Carter, which is what would happen if the federal transportation regulators saw these inspection logs,"" Evan said coldly. ""You keep your freedom. You lose your empire.""
May you like
""No!"" Sienna shrieked, banging her manicured fist on the table. ""You can't do this! We have a status in this city! We have social standing! Carter, do not sign that! We will hire the best litigators in the country!""
Evan closed his folder with a sharp snap that silenced the room instantly. ""If Carter doesn't sign by noon today, Crestline files formal foreclosure proceedings. By five o'clock, the federal marshals freeze your accounts. By tomorrow morning, your Hamptons house, your cars, and your designer wardrobe will be scheduled for public auction. Sign the restructuring, Carter, or leave this building with nothing.""
