Chapter 5 - The Mask Falls

Silence gripped the boardroom like a vice. It was an absolute, suffocating quiet that seemed to drain the very oxygen from the room.

Sienna’s face drained of every drop of color, turning an ash-gray that made her heavy makeup look grotesque. Her lips parted, trembling slightly, but no sound came out. Her mind raced frantically, trying to reconcile the sun-browned seasonal worker who had stood drenched in ice water on the eighteenth fairway with the impeccably dressed billionaire now looking at her with cold, merciless detachment.

""You..."" Sienna stammered, pointing a shaking finger. ""You... you were... you carried my...""

""Your bags, Mrs. Vail,"" Evan finished calmly, pulling out the plush leather chair at the head of the table and sitting down. ""Until you decided that adhering to club safety regulations warranted throwing a full tumbler of ice water directly into my face.""

Carter’s head whipped between his wife and Evan, a look of pure, unadulterated panic twisting his features. ""Sienna... what is he talking about? Who is this man? Do you know him?""

""He was the caddie!"" Sienna shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical disbelief. ""Carter, he was wearing a sweat-stained green vest! He was carrying clubs for fifty dollars an hour! He's an impostor! He’s playing some sick game!""

""Sit down, Carter,"" Evan said, his tone devoid of anger, which made it ten times more terrifying.

Carter didn't sit; his knees simply gave out, dropping him heavily into the nearest swivel chair. ""Mr. Cole... Evan Cole? The Evan Cole? You... you're Apex Meridian?""

""I am,"" Evan said simply. He opened a sleek black folder in front of him. ""And you, Carter, are currently seventy-two hours away from total corporate liquidation. Your company owes Crestline Capital ninety-four million, two hundred thousand dollars, due this coming Friday. You came here this morning hoping to secure a three-year debt extension at favorable interest rates.""

Carter began to hyperventilate, clutching the edge of the conference table. ""Mr. Cole, please... whatever happened at the club, it was a terrible misunderstanding! My wife has a short temper, she doesn't think—""

""A misunderstanding?"" Tess spoke up, her voice trembling slightly with righteous indignation before finding its steel. ""Mrs. Vail looked Evan directly in the eye, told him nobody was irreplaceable, called him a broke nobody, and dumped freezing water on him while Marcus Reid laughed. And then they fired me for telling the truth. That wasn't a misunderstanding. That was cruelty.""

Sienna gripped the back of Carter’s chair, her arrogance desperately trying to reassert itself. ""Even if you own this company, you're a businessman! You wouldn't destroy a ninety-million-dollar commercial enterprise over a petty personal disagreement! That would be completely irrational!""

Evan looked up from the folder, his eyes meeting Sienna's with piercing intensity. ""You told me on Saturday that nobody is irreplaceable, Mrs. Vail. Especially someone you deemed beneath you. Let me ask you: what makes you think your husband's logistics company is irreplaceable?""
