Chapter 2 - Country Club Royalty

Sienna Vail adjusted the emerald cuffs of her custom silk blouse as she sat under the striped canopy of the Hawthorne Ridge terrace, sipping a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The afternoon sun cast a warm golden hue over the manicured fairway, where wealthy members drifted between holes in pristine electric carts. Beside her, Marcus Reid personally refilled her chilled wine bucket, bowing with the practiced obsequiousness that had secured his hefty general manager bonus for the past six years.
""I must apologize once again for that unpleasantness this morning, Sienna,"" Marcus said smoothly, his smile radiating slick professionalism. ""Some of these temporary seasonal workers fail to grasp the caliber of environment Hawthorne Ridge maintains. The boy was utterly defiant, but rest assured, he won't be setting foot on these grounds ever again. I’ve confiscated his badge and issued a permanent trespass warning.""
Sienna took a slow, languid sip, waving her manicured hand dismissively. ""Honestly, Marcus, it’s about standards. If you allow some peasant carrying bags to lecture members on club regulations, you lose the entire prestige of the institution. He actually thought his little rulebook mattered more than my convenience. The audacity was mind-boggling.""
""Precisely why I handled it immediately,"" Marcus said, puffing his chest slightly. ""And the girl who attempted to defend him—Tess—was dismissed on the spot as well. Zero tolerance for disrespect. Your family’s continued support of our clubhouse expansion initiative means the world to the board of directors.""
Just then, Carter Vail walked onto the terrace, his expensive linen shirt damp with sweat, his expression dark and tense. He dropped his leather briefcase onto an empty chair and collapsed into the seat opposite his wife. At forty-three, Carter looked worn down, the dark circles under his eyes betraying weeks of sleepless nights spent watching interest rates creep higher against his precarious commercial empire.
""Carter, darling,"" Sienna purred, leaning across the table to kiss his cheek. ""You missed quite the scene on the eighteenth. A seasonal caddie actually tried to refuse my bags. I had Marcus throw him off the property, but honestly, you should have seen the boy's smug little face when I gave him a taste of ice water.""
Carter didn't smile. He ran a trembling hand through his thinning hair and stared at the polished stone floor. ""I don't have time for your country club feuds, Sienna. I just got off the phone with our chief financial officer. Something went completely sideways at Crestline Capital this morning.""
Marcus blinked, sensing the tension. ""Trouble with the refinancing, Carter?""
""They halted the final paperwork,"" Carter snapped, his voice tight with anxiety. ""The underwriting was ninety-nine percent finished. We were supposed to sign the documents at ten o’clock on Monday. Now their managing partner says the entire package has been escalated to their parent holding firm for an emergency integrity audit. If that loan doesn't fund by Wednesday, our primary lenders call the margin. Every truck, warehouse, and dispatch terminal we own goes into immediate receivership.""
Sienna laughed airily, brushing a speck of dust from her collar. ""Darling, you always panic over these Wall Street formalities. You’re Carter Vail. They want your business. Just walk into that meeting on Monday, remind them of your standing, and sign the checks. These money managers just want to feel important.""

""You don't understand the scale of this,"" Carter hissed under his breath. ""The holding firm that acquired Crestline is Apex Meridian. They don't take calls. Nobody even knows who the principal owner is—he operates through private proxies and buys up sovereign debt for sport. If they squeeze us, we are wiped out.""
Sienna rolled her eyes, raising her crystal glass to the sunlight. ""Relax, Carter. Power always respects power. They’ll sign. Now order me some oysters; I’ve had an exhausting morning putting the help in their place.""
