Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

Monday morning arrived under a blanket of heavy, humid gray clouds. At precisely eight-forty-five, a black luxury sedan pulled up to the circular driveway of Apex Meridian Tower. Carter Vail stepped out first, nervously adjusting the silk tie that felt like a noose around his throat. Sienna stepped out behind him, clad in an ivory Chanel pantsuit, oversized sunglasses, and high heels that clicked sharply against the polished granite plaza.

""Do we really have to do this in person, Carter?"" Sienna complained as they entered the soaring marble lobby. ""The security here is utterly ridiculous. They made me surrender my purse for scanning like I was boarding a commercial flight.""

""Be quiet, Sienna,"" Carter whispered frantically, wiping sweat from his brow as the high-speed elevator shot them up toward the fiftieth floor. ""Apex Meridian manages portfolios that could swallow my entire industry whole. If the managing partner decides he doesn't like my balance sheet, we are bankrupt by noon. Just sit there, look elegant, and don't say a single word.""

Sienna scoffed, checking her reflection in the elevator’s mirrored wall. ""You worry too much. These corporate types love social pedigree. Once they realize we belong to Hawthorne Ridge and move in the same circles as the governor, they’ll fall in line.""

The elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing a reception area that looked more like an ultra-modern art museum than a financial firm. A receptionist with razor-sharp posture guided them toward the heavy double doors of the master boardroom.

Carter took a deep, steadying breath and pushed the doors open. ""Good morning. I'm Carter Vail, here for the executive review with—""

The words froze in his throat.

Sitting at the far end of the thirty-foot mahogany conference table was a young woman in a navy blazer. Carter didn't recognize her immediately, but Sienna stopped dead in her tracks, her mouth dropping open behind her sunglasses.

""What is this?"" Sienna gasped, stepping forward indignantly. ""Marcus Reid told me he fired this girl on Saturday! Why is a disgraced, low-class caddie sitting in an executive boardroom?""

""I suggest you take your seats, Mr. and Mrs. Vail,"" a crisp voice rang out from the side of the room. Lena Brooks emerged from the shadows, placing a thick leather-bound dossier on the table with a dull thud.

Carter grabbed his wife's arm, his instincts screaming danger. ""Sienna, shut up. Ma'am, are you the senior partner representing Crestline?""

""I am Lena Brooks, chief legal counsel for Apex Meridian Holdings,"" Lena replied coldly, not extending a hand. ""And no, I am not the senior partner. The sole owner and chief executive of Apex Meridian will be joining us shortly to deliver his final decision regarding your ninety-million-dollar debt rollover.""

Sienna yanked her arm free from Carter’s grip, stepping toward the table with an arrogant glare directed straight at Tess. ""Before we discuss any business, I demand to know why this pathetic girl is in the room. Is this some kind of sick corporate joke? She was fired for insolence at my country club forty-eight hours ago!""

""She is here as an official observer representing the executive board,"" Lena said evenly. ""And as for the country club... you might want to review the ownership structure of the land you play on.""

Before Sienna could fire back another venomous insult, the private side door of the boardroom clicked open.

Footsteps echoed softly against the hardwood floor.

A tall, athletic figure in a perfectly tailored charcoal three-piece suit walked into the room, holding a thin ceramic coffee cup. He set the cup down, unbuttoned his suit jacket, and looked directly into Sienna Vail’s wide, horrified eyes.

It was Evan Cole.
