Chapter 9 - The Fall of Langford

Within seventy-two hours, the business world in Chicago experienced a seismic shift.
The story broke across the front page of the Chicago Tribune and the Wall Street Journal: ""Reclusive Asteron Heir Unmasked: Langford Development Collapses Amid Fraud and Debt Foreclosure.""
Ethan Cole's return to the public eye sent Asteron Global's stock value climbing by fourteen percent in international markets. But for Trevor Langford, the fallout was instantaneous and absolute.
Deprived of Asteron’s fund, Trevor’s creditors panicked. The debt notes Asteron had acquired were called in immediately. By Friday afternoon, federal marshals arrived at Langford Development’s glass headquarters on Wacker Drive, padlocking the doors and seizing servers, hard drives, and corporate accounts.
Trevor was formally indicted on four counts of municipal wire fraud, offshore tax evasion, and illegal bidding manipulation. His leased Italian sports car was towed from the curb outside Asteron Tower while a crowd of laughing office workers recorded video on their smartphones. He was released on bail, his passport surrendered, facing up to twelve years in federal prison.
For Madison and Denise, the nightmare was equally humiliating.
Madison’s social circle evaporated overnight. The wealthy socialites who had fawned over her engagement ring at lunch on Thursday deleted her from group chats and revoked her invitations to weekend charity galas.
Her personal credit cards—which had been tied to Trevor’s corporate subsidiary accounts—were declined at every boutique on Michigan Avenue. When she tried to return the emerald gown she had worn to the summit, the store manager refused the refund, citing a strict policy against items worn at public events.
On Saturday morning, Madison sat at the kitchen counter of her mother’s cramped, dated townhouse in Lincoln Square.
Denise was pacing the floor, waving past-due utility bills and eviction notices. ""We gave up the lease on your old apartment, Madison! The landlord already rented it to a dental student! Where are we supposed to go? How could you let this happen?""
""How could I let this happen?"" Madison shouted, slamming her coffee mug onto the laminate counter, her eyes swollen and red. ""You pushed me, Mom! You told me Ethan was a nobody! You told me Trevor was our golden ticket! You told me to laugh at Ethan outside Asteron Tower!""
""You kicked the ring, Madison!"" Denise fired back, her face red with rage. ""You threw forty dollars on the ground! That boy was a multi-billionaire! He held the keys to half this city! You threw away the kind of fortune our family hasn't seen in seven generations!""
Madison broke down, burying her face in her arms on the table.
She opened her phone. Photos from two years ago popped up in her memory feed: Ethan standing in a tiny kitchen, covered in flour, baking her a birthday cake from scratch with a goofy smile on his face. Ethan holding an umbrella over her head in the pouring rain while his own coat soaked through. Ethan looking at her with pure, unconditional devotion.
“I think I finally understand exactly what I won,” he had told her on the steps.
He hadn't been defeated. He had been set free.
Madison opened her messaging app and typed out a long, rambling, three-page apology to Ethan’s old phone number, pouring out her soul, begging for just ten minutes over coffee, swearing she would live in a tent with him if he would just take her back.
She pressed send.
A red exclamation point immediately appeared next to the message bubble:
Message Failed to Deliver. You have been blocked by this recipient.

Madison let the phone fall from her limp fingers. It cracked against the linoleum floor, but she didn't even move to pick it up.
