Chapter 1 - The Architect at the Planter

""For what?"" Nora Bennett asked, adjusting the fragile cardboard model pinned under her right arm. Her chestnut hair blew wild against the freezing wind tunneling down Michigan Avenue, but her amber eyes were remarkably sharp and entirely devoid of pity. ""You didn't humiliate yourself out here. They did. Money buys tailored wool, not class.""

Ethan Cole looked at her for a heartbeat. The sting from Madison’s ringing laughter was still burning in his chest, but looking into this woman’s earnest, no-nonsense face brought him instantly back to reality. ""You're competing in the summit today?""

Nora looked down at her badge and gave a rueful chuckle. ""Competing is a generous word. Surviving is more like it. I have a presentation at eleven for the South Side community revitalization project. Small firm, zero corporate backing, up against giants like Langford Development. I’m basically cannon fodder for guys like Trevor.""

""You don't sound intimidated.""

""Oh, I'm terrified,"" she admitted cheerfully, holding the revolving glass door open with her shoulder. ""My rent is two weeks late, my laptop screen flickers when it gets warm, and that model took me forty-eight straight hours without sleep. But my design gives three hundred local families real green space and affordable housing, while Trevor’s proposal tears down community centers to build luxury penthouses nobody can afford. Good architecture is about people, not just quarterly margins.""

Ethan held the door wider so she wouldn't crush her fragile cardboard building. ""That's a rare perspective in this building.""

""Probably why I'll lose by noon,"" she laughed softly, stepping into the massive, marble-lined lobby of Asteron Tower. ""Anyway, keep your head up, technician. The right person wouldn't trade three years of devotion for a leased sports car and an oversized rock.""

She gave him an encouraging, lopsided smile and hurried toward the registration desk in the main atrium. Ethan stood near the towering indoor palms, watching her go.

His phone buzzed sharply in his inner pocket. He pulled it out.

The screen displayed an encrypted incoming line. The caller ID read simply: Vance Vance - Chief Legal Counsel, Asteron Global.

Ethan answered, stepping slightly out of the crowd's path. ""Marcus.""

""Sir, your private flight landed forty minutes ago according to our manifest,"" Marcus Vance said, his crisp British accent tense with urgency. ""The board of directors is assembled in the 52nd-floor executive suite. Security said they haven't seen your motorcade at the private underground bay. Are you en route?""

""I'm already in the lobby,"" Ethan said quietly.

""In the lobby? Did you take the subway again?"" Marcus sighed, though there was deep affection beneath his exasperation. ""Ethan, your grandfather built Asteron Holdings from a single steel warehouse into a twelve-billion-dollar empire. He spent five years preparing you to take over the chairmanship. The press knows the reclusive heir has finally arrived in Chicago to sign off on the hundred-million-dollar fund. You cannot be wandering around the ground floor in an unbranded coat.""

Ethan looked down at his salt-stained boots and the navy wool coat he had worn for four straight winters—the same coat Madison said made him look like a failure. ""I needed to see someone first, Marcus. It's done now.""

""Madison?"" Marcus paused. ""Did she...""

""She accepted Trevor Langford's ring on the front steps ten minutes ago,"" Ethan said evenly, his tone cold and steady. ""Threw forty dollars on the pavement so I could buy breakfast.""

Silence stretched over the line for three long seconds. When Marcus spoke again, his voice had dropped into lethal formality. ""Langford Development is currently the frontrunner for our municipal fund. The municipal committee favored his bid because of political ties. Do you wish for me to have security escort him off the property immediately?""

""No,"" Ethan replied, a faint, chilling smirk touching the corners of his mouth. ""Let Trevor Langford make his presentation. Let him put every single card he has on the table. In fact, make sure Madison Reed and her mother Denise have front-row guest passes to the boardroom gallery. They came here to watch Trevor win. Let them watch.""

""Understood, Chairman,"" Marcus replied softly. ""Your private elevator is keyed. The penthouse suite is clear. Your clothes are waiting.""

Ethan hung up. He looked toward the elevators where Trevor, Madison, and Denise were laughing loudly, waiting for the VIP express car. Madison was holding Trevor's arm, tilting her head to show off the sparkling rock to two envious female executives nearby.

Ethan slipped into the shadowed, fingerprint-locked security corridor behind the digital directory. He pressed his thumb against the glass scanner. A soft beep echoed.

Welcome, Chairman Cole.

The private elevator doors slid open silently, and Ethan stepped inside, leaving his old life behind on the ground floor.
