Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Garden

At twelve-forty-five, Trevor Langford stood outside the double doors of Boardroom Alpha, straightening his Italian silk tie while checking his reflection in his smartphone screen.

Madison stood close to him, dabbing a tiny brush of powder onto his forehead. Denise was pacing behind them, clutching an expensive leather handbag and practically vibrating with nervous excitement.

""Remember, baby,"" Madison purred, smoothing his lapels with hands that bore his new ring. ""Play up the high-end retail numbers. Asteron is an international juggernaut. They want prestige. When you win this, we’re moving straight into the penthouse at the Gold Coast.""

""Don't worry, Maddie,"" Trevor smirked, tossing his phone to an assistant. ""I met the deputy mayor for breakfast. The city committee gave Langford Development a glowing recommendation. Asteron’s board doesn't have a choice. This hundred million is ours. And once that contract is executed, my firm’s valuation doubles overnight.""

Denise clasped her hands together. ""To think my daughter could have ended up stuck in an apartment with that pathetic Ethan! God truly watches over us. That boy didn't even have the decency to grovel properly when you threw that money at him.""

""Ethan was a pebble in your shoe, darling,"" Trevor laughed. ""Forget him. Today, you enter the billionaire circle.""

The boardroom doors opened wide. Marcus Vance stepped out, his face an impenetrable mask of British discipline.

""Mr. Langford. Miss Reed. Mrs. Reed. The committee is prepared to receive your final submission. Family and guests may sit in the observation gallery behind the main chamber.""

""Excellent,"" Trevor said, stepping past Marcus with boundless confidence. ""Let’s make history.""

Madison and Denise took their seats in the raised VIP gallery, separated from the main floor by an elegant, knee-high brass railing. Madison looked down at the boardroom table with utter disdain, noticing Nora Bennett sitting quietly in the corner of the gallery holding her notepad.

Madison leaned over the railing toward Nora, whispering with a poisonous smirk: ""Still here, honey? Waiting to watch a real master at work? Take notes. Maybe Trevor will hire you to design the janitor's closet in his new tower.""

Nora didn't look at her. She kept her eyes glued to the center of the room, a strange, quiet serenity on her face. ""Watch the presentation, Madison. You might learn what real value looks like.""

Madison scoffed and sat back, crossing her legs and flashing her diamond under the lights.

Down on the floor, Trevor stood at the podium. Massive glossy renderings of ""The Emerald Towers"" flashed onto the eighty-foot screens. Sleek glass spires, infinity pools perched hundreds of feet in the air, exclusive private helipads, and high-end boutiques lining private avenues.

""Gentlemen of the board,"" Trevor announced, his baritone voice dripping with polished salesmanship. ""Asteron Global deserves a legacy project that echoes across the international market. My plan completely eradicates the South Side blight. We will clear out six city blocks of aging brick, displace the low-yield population, and construct a three-billion-dollar luxury ecosystem that guarantees Asteron a thirty-two percent return within thirty-six months.""

He paced the floor like a tech CEO, flashing slide after slide of aggressive financial projections, foreign venture capital partnerships, and glossy promotional videos.

""The weak cling to sentimentality,"" Trevor proclaimed boldly, playing directly to what he assumed was Asteron’s ruthless corporate ethos. ""The strong build monuments. Langford Development has the political capital, the legal machinery, and the unyielding drive to deliver the most profitable urban regeneration project in Chicago’s history.""

He clicked off the final slide, leaving the glowing Langford logo hovering on the massive display. He spread his arms wide and gave a deep, triumphant bow.

In the gallery, Denise began clapping enthusiastically. Madison joined in, beaming down at her fiancé like an empress looking at her conqueror.

Along the mahogany table, the board members remained completely still. Nobody clapped. Nobody moved.

Trevor’s smile wavered for a split second. He cleared his throat. ""Are there... any questions from the committee?""

From the head of the table, behind a towering computer monitor and a shadow cast by the window pillar, a slow, solitary round of applause began.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

The sound was sharp, hollow, and echoing.

""A very impressive presentation, Trevor,"" a familiar, calm voice said from behind the monitors. ""Thorough, polished... and completely fraudulent.""

May you like

Trevor froze. The blood drained from his face as the chair turned.
