Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

Ethan Cole stood up from the head of the table.
He walked out into the open space between the boardroom table and the podium. The light from the high glass ceiling hit his crisp charcoal suit, illuminating the sapphire tie pin and the unmistakable gleam of the vintage Patek Philippe on his wrist.
In the VIP gallery, Madison’s hands stopped mid-applause. Her jaw dropped. Her breath hitched in her throat as if someone had plunged a dagger into her chest.
""Ethan?"" she whispered, her voice cracking across the silent room.
Denise’s eyes bulged. She grabbed the brass railing so hard her knuckles turned chalk-white. ""What is he doing down there? Security! What is that maintenance worker doing touching those chairs?!""
""Sit down, Mrs. Reed,"" Marcus Vance commanded, his voice cutting through the room like a steel whip. ""Or you will be removed in handcuffs. You are speaking to Ethan Cole, the Chairman, Chief Executive, and majority shareholder of Asteron Global Holdings.""
The words hit the room like an artillery shell.
Madison felt the room spin violently around her. The world tilted. ""Chairman? No... no, that's impossible. He’s... he fixes broken HVAC systems! He lived on third-avenue! He wore that terrible coat for four years!""
Trevor stood frozen at the podium, his face transitioning through shades of gray, white, and sickly green. The arrogance melted out of his eyes, replaced by pure, cold panic.
""Cole?"" Trevor stammered, his fingers trembling against the mahogany lectern. ""Ethan Cole? You’re Arthur Cole’s grandson? The heir who was living in London?""
""Arthur Cole was my grandfather,"" Ethan said calmly, stopping three paces from Trevor. ""He believed that a man who cannot work with his hands in the dirt has no right to hold the steering wheel of a corporation. For three years, I lived on a technician’s salary. I worked inside the boiler rooms and utility tunnels of this city. I wanted to see who stood beside me when there was nothing to offer but my heart, my time, and my character.""
Ethan glanced up toward the gallery. His gaze locked with Madison’s. Her mouth was opening and closing soundlessly, tears of sheer disbelief and panic welling in her eyes.
""And I learned a great deal, Madison,"" Ethan said, his voice echoing off the glass. ""I learned that three years of loyalty, laughter, and care can be thrown on cold stone for twenty dollars and a three-carat trinket.""
Trevor swallowed hard, trying desperately to regain his footing. He forced a sickening, sweating smile onto his face. ""Ethan... look, man. Outside... that was just business. Friendly banter between guys, you know? Madison and I... we just hit it off recently. But business is business! The hundred-million-dollar fund! You saw my numbers! You saw my projections! Thirty-two percent return!""
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice.
""Let’s talk about your numbers, Trevor,"" Ethan said, tapping a key on his personal tablet.
The massive wall screens flickered. Trevor's glossy renderings vanished, instantly replaced by stark, black-and-white bank statements, tax audits, and internal municipal memos stamped with red CONFIDENTIAL seals.
Trevor took a stumbling step backward. ""Where did you get those?""
""You didn't create a development plan, Trevor,"" Ethan said ruthlessly. ""You created an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands designed to siphon forty-five million dollars of Asteron’s investment money directly into your failing speculative properties in Miami. Your company is ninety million dollars in debt. You've bribed two junior planning commissioners to fast-track your zoning permits.""
The room erupted into gasps. The board members shook their heads in disgust.
""And worst of all,"" Ethan continued, stepping directly into Trevor’s personal space until the taller man shrank back, ""your proposal calls for the illegal demolition of a historic veterans' community center on 47th Street—a center my grandfather built with his own hands in 1968.""
""I... I didn't know that,"" Trevor whispered, sweat pouring down the sides of his face, soaking into his Italian collar. ""Ethan, please... we can rework the plans! We can partner! Langford Development can execute your exact vision!""
""Langford Development won't be executing anything,"" Marcus Vance interrupted, stepping forward with a sheaf of legal documents. ""Ten minutes ago, Asteron Holdings purchased the defaulted senior debt notes on your commercial properties from Chicago First National Bank. As of 12:40 PM, Mr. Langford, you are completely insolvent. The SEC and the Cook County State's Attorney have already been handed your shell account records.""

Trevor collapsed backward into an empty chair, staring into the floor as if the earth had opened up to swallow him whole.
