Chapter 7 - Facing the Matriarch

As Julian and I stepped onto the ballroom floor, heads turned in unison. Several prominent board members and hospital administrators immediately approached, greeting Julian with deep deference while offering me genuine, warm congratulations on my pregnancy. Julian introduced me with effortless elegance, keeping his hand lightly at the small of my back, ensuring that everyone in attendance recognized me as a person of distinction and honor.
Across the room, Brandon’s face was an alarming shade of mottled crimson. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a visible vein pulsed at his temple. Savannah clutched his arm, whispering frantically in his ear, clearly rattled by the sight of her fiancé’s 'barren' ex-wife arriving as the guest of the evening’s most powerful benefactor.
Unable to contain her venomous indignation, Evelyn Pierce set her champagne flute onto a passing waiter's tray and marched across the polished marble floor. Her diamonds clattered against her chest, her sharp eyes narrowed into slits of pure disgust. Brandon followed reluctantly behind her, trying to pull his mother back, but Evelyn was a woman accustomed to social bulldozing.
""Madeline,"" Evelyn boomed as she reached our circle, intentionally speaking loud enough to draw the attention of nearby donors and journalists. ""I must say, the sheer audacity required to show your face in this room is astonishing, even for you.""
Julian stepped slightly forward, his expression turning to frost. ""Mrs. Pierce, I suggest you mind your tone in this venue.""
""Don't patronize me, Dr. Vance,"" Evelyn snapped, waving a dismissive, manicured hand toward Julian before locking her glare onto me. ""I don't know what kind of cheap trick you used to worm your way into this gala as Dr. Vance’s date, Madeline, but parading your illicit pregnancy in front of respectable families after the way you humiliated my son is sickening.""
""Mother, stop,"" Brandon whispered hoarsely, sweat beading along his hairline. He looked frantically at Julian, remembering the warning delivered at the baby store. ""Let's just go back to the sponsor lounge.""
""We will do no such thing, Brandon!"" Evelyn declared imperiously, turning to the surrounding crowd. ""This woman wasted seven years of my son’s life, playing the tragic victim while hiding her absolute inability to produce an heir. And now, less than a year after he graciously freed her, she appears pregnant by some random stranger, flaunting her indiscretion at a charity for children! Have you no shame, Madeline?""
Savannah stepped up beside Brandon, flashing a tight, venomous grin for the benefit of a society photographer hovering nearby. ""It really is quite tacky, Maddie. Showing up here uninvited just to stalk Brandon on the night of our engagement announcement? It screams obsession.""
I looked at Evelyn Pierce. I looked at Savannah Brooks. And finally, I looked directly into the terrified, guilty eyes of Brandon Pierce. The paralyzing intimidation that had suffocated me for nine years vanished into thin air, leaving behind an impenetrable wall of diamond-hard resolve.
""I didn't show up uninvited, Savannah,"" I said, my voice carrying clear, resonant, and entirely unshaken across the silent ballroom. ""And I certainly didn't come here to stalk a coward who spent four years lying to everyone in this room, starting with his own mother.""
Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls in outrage. ""How dare you speak to us like that! Brandon gave you everything! He suffered in silence while you failed him year after year!""
""Did he?"" I asked, a cool, dangerous smile touching my lips.

I reached into the small, elegant leather clutch Julian handed me, retrieving a crisp, professionally bound white folder embossed with the certified seal of St. Jude's Reproductive Health Archives.
""Evelyn,"" I said softly, stepping closer so every diamond on her neck reflected my gaze. ""Would you like to tell this entire room why Brandon's 'suffering' was such a tragedy? Or should I read aloud the certified medical records he hid in his safe four years ago?""
