Chapter 5 - An Alliance Formed

Walking back through Baby Haven with Julian at my side felt entirely different than entering alone. When I reached for the glass bottles, Julian took them gently from my hands, checking the flow rates and anti-colic valves with expert medical precision. He carried my basket, picked out the softest organic cotton blankets, and even insisted on purchasing an ergonomic nursing pillow that I had reluctantly bypassed due to cost.

""Julian, please, you don't have to buy this for me,"" I protested as we approached the register. ""You've already done far too much.""

""Consider it a gift from a friend who admires your resilience,"" Julian said smoothly, sliding his black card into the payment terminal before I could reach for my purse. ""And consider it a small penalty for the stress you endured in aisle four under my watch.""

As we walked out into the crisp Portland rain, Julian held a large black umbrella squarely over my head, keeping every drop of moisture from touching my coat while his own shoulder grew damp. He opened the passenger door of his sleek, dark SUV, helping me settle comfortably into the heated leather seat before stowing my purchases in the back.

During the short drive through downtown Portland toward the medical district, Julian spoke not just as a doctor, but as a man who genuinely cared. He told me about his sister, whose baby shower was the following weekend, and how his dedication to reproductive medicine stemmed from watching his own mother battle systemic healthcare dismissals years ago.

""When you first walked into my clinic six months ago, Maddie, I noticed something rare in you,"" Julian said quietly as we stopped at a red light overlooking the Willamette River. ""Most patients who come through our doors carry deep despair. But you carried a quiet, unbreakable determination. You weren't having a child to fill a void or satisfy a society requirement. You were having a child out of pure, unadulterated love. That kind of mother is invincible.""

A lump formed in my throat, but it was born of gratitude, not sorrow. ""I spent so long believing I was unworthy, Julian. It’s strange how quickly a toxic voice can become your own inner monologue.""

""We silence that monologue today,"" he declared firmly.

We arrived at the prestigious Pacific Reproductive Institute. Julian escorted me through the private executive entrance, bypassing the main waiting area, and led me into his spacious, mahogany-lined office. The room smelled of polished wood, fresh paper, and faint peppermint. He walked behind his expansive desk, opened a locked fireproof filing cabinet, and retrieved a thick, beige folder stamped with my name and Brandon’s former joint account number.

Julian opened the file and spread three official documents across the desk.

""Here is the St. Jude's lab analysis dated four years ago,"" Julian explained, pointing with an ink pen. ""Your profile: completely normal in every diagnostic category. And here is Brandon Pierce's pathology: zero sperm count, certified non-functional germ cells, diagnosed primary testicular failure. And look at the final page.""

I leaned in, my heart pounding against my ribs.

On the third page was a digital signature and delivery confirmation log from St. Jude’s patient portal. Brandon had logged into the portal using his private credentials on October 14th at 2:15 PM, four years ago. He had downloaded the complete PDF report. Two days later, he had arrived home with artificial tears in his eyes, sat on our bed, and told me that my body was barren.

""He held the proof on October 14th,"" I whispered, clutching the edge of the desk. ""And on October 16th, he told me that God had made me incapable of motherhood.""

""And here is the most damning piece,"" Julian added, turning a fourth page toward me. ""Three weeks ago, Brandon Pierce registered at our clinic under an anonymous inquiry alias, requesting information on discreet surrogate implantation using anonymous sperm donors, specifically requesting that the medical procedure be concealed from public view and NDA-bound.""

I looked up at Julian, my breath hitching in pure disbelief. ""He’s planning to secretly use a donor with Savannah, pretend the child is biologically his, and keep his pristine reputation intact forever.""

May you like

""Precisely,"" Julian smiled coldly. ""He intends to build his perfect family dynasty on a foundation of stolen truth, while leaving you to carry the public shame of his own biological reality.""

I took a deep breath, feeling the undeniable weight of the papers beneath my fingers. ""Julian, make three copies of everything. It’s time Brandon Pierce learned what happens when you build an empire on a lie.""
