Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Trap

The opportunity to shatter Brandon's illusion arrived much sooner than expected. The following Thursday evening, the Portland Children's Foundation was hosting its annual high-profile charity gala at the historic Sentinel Hotel. It was the premier social event of the season, attended by the city’s top entrepreneurs, philanthropists, social media elites, and medical professionals.

Brandon’s boutique wealth management firm was one of the secondary bronze sponsors, and Savannah Brooks had spent the past three weeks blasting her Instagram feed with updates about her bespoke emerald gown, her keynote speech on 'Modern Family Aspirations,' and their impending society wedding. To make matters even more deliberate, Brandon’s mother, Evelyn Pierce, was serving as the gala’s honorary co-chair.

Julian Vance, however, was not a mere attendee. The Vance Medical Group was the diamond patron of the entire foundation, and Julian’s family had founded the pediatric wing of the hospital the gala was funding.

""You don't have to go if you aren't ready, Maddie,"" Julian told me that morning over tea at my apartment. ""I can have my attorneys send the certified file to his legal team privately, and it will end there in closed settlement rooms.""

I looked down at the soft lavender maternity dress hanging in my closet—an elegant, empire-waist silk gown Julian’s sister had graciously styled for me after learning of my story. ""No, Julian,"" I said, my voice steady with quiet fire. ""Brandon humiliated me in a public baby store. He smeared my dignity in front of strangers, and his mother spent years telling everyone in this city that I was a broken failure. If they live by public appearances, they can fall by them.""

At seven o’clock that evening, the Sentinel Hotel ballroom was bathed in warm golden light and the sophisticated hum of an elite crowd. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, champagne flutes chimed softly, and high-society cameras flashed near the grand entrance where Savannah Brooks was holding court. Dressed in her dazzling emerald gown, Savannah smiled radiant for the local press photographers, with Brandon standing tall at her side, wearing a tailored tuxedo and a look of supreme smugness.

Nearby, Brandon’s mother, Evelyn, clad in severe navy satin and draped in heavy diamonds, was holding forth to a circle of prominent city matrons.

""It takes immense courage to walk away from a tragedy,"" Evelyn was saying loudly, dabbing at her dry eyes for effect. ""Brandon stayed by Maddie’s side for years, praying for a miracle that her poor body simply couldn't provide. A man of his stature needs a legacy. We are just so blessed that he found someone vibrant like Savannah to carry the Pierce name forward.""

""And what a tragic shame that Maddie couldn't even maintain her self-respect afterward,"" a society woman murmured. ""I heard she was spotted at Baby Haven, pregnant by some nameless man and shopping all by herself.""

""Desperation makes common women do vulgar things,"" Evelyn scoffed, sipping her vintage champagne with an air of superior disdain.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the top of the grand ballroom staircase swung open.

The room’s ambient chatter began to hush as the master of ceremonies stepped to the microphone. ""Ladies and gentlemen, welcoming our diamond patron and chief benefactor of the Pediatric Pavilion, Dr. Julian Vance, accompanied by his guest, Miss Madeline Ross.""

A collective murmur swept through the grand ballroom. Brandon froze mid-sip, his champagne glass hovering inches from his lips. Savannah snapped her head toward the grand staircase, her influencer smile dropping instantly.

Descending the marble stairs on the arm of the city’s most eligible and respected physician, I held my head high. The lavender silk draped gracefully over my thirty-four-week bump, glowing under the crystal lights. My dark hair was swept into an intricate updo, my skin radiant, and my eyes luminous with absolute composure. I did not look like an abandoned, desperate divorcee hiding in shame. I looked like a queen commanding her court.
