Chapter 2 - The Unexpected Guardian

Julian Vance was not the kind of man anyone ignored. Standing six-foot-two with broad shoulders, an impeccably trimmed jawline, and piercing slate-gray eyes, he commanded effortless authority. As the lead reproductive endocrinologist at the Pacific Reproductive Institute—and the brilliant specialist who had guided me through my solitary fertility journey—Julian had seen me at my most vulnerable. He had held my file when I was terrified, encouraged me when I doubted my strength, and treated me with an unwavering respect no man had ever shown me before.
""Is there an issue here?"" Julian's deep, resonant voice cut through the tense air of the aisle like a scalpel. He stepped deliberately between Brandon and my shopping cart, subtly shielding my swollen belly from Brandon's aggressive posture.
Brandon blinked, clearly caught off guard by Julian’s imposing stature and refined elegance. For a split second, Brandon’s arrogant smirk faltered, his eyes darting to the expensive Swiss timepiece peeking from beneath Julian’s tailored wool sleeve—a stark contrast to the modest steel watch I had bought Brandon years ago.
""This is a private conversation between my ex-wife and me,"" Brandon muttered defensively, puffing out his chest to regain lost ground. ""Who the hell are you? The deadbeat boyfriend she convinced to knock her up before ditching her?""
Savannah gasped again, this time with genuine curiosity, her influencer instincts immediately cataloging Julian’s luxury coat and striking features. ""Brandon, calm down,"" she whispered, though her eyes lingered appreciatively on Julian.
Julian didn't blink. His expression remained entirely granite, projecting an icy professionalism that made Brandon look like an insecure petulant child. ""I am Maddie’s physician,"" Julian stated calmly, each word measured and heavy with unspoken warning. ""And as her medical provider, I suggest you lower your voice and take three steps back before store security removes you for harassing a pregnant woman in her third trimester.""
Brandon let out a harsh, dry laugh, trying desperately to recover his swagger. ""Her doctor? Since when do high-priced doctors play personal bodyguard in baby stores on a Saturday afternoon? How touching. Did she hire you to hold her hand because the real father ran for the hills?""
""I ran into Maddie while picking up a baby shower gift for my sister,"" Julian replied without missing a beat, not giving Brandon an inch of emotional leverage. ""And unlike you, Mr. Pierce—whose name I know quite well from Maddie’s prior medical records—I understand basic decency. Furthermore, as an endocrinologist, I am well aware of the physiological stress you are attempting to inflict on a patient who has endured far more than you could possibly comprehend.""
""Prior records?"" Brandon stiffened, a flicker of genuine unease flashing across his features before he quickly masked it with smug bravado. ""Then you know her body was never capable of sustaining life. If she’s pregnant now, she must have gotten reckless with someone behind my back before we even split. She played the tragic victim while cheating on me!""
""Shut your mouth, Brandon!"" I finally erupted, the sheer absurdity of his accusation breaking through my restraint. ""I never looked at another human being while I wore your ring! I spent years hating myself, believing your mother's poisonous words, crying until my eyes bled because you looked at me like I was defective! You wanted a baby? You walked out because of a baby! And now that I'm carrying one on my own terms, with my own courage, you want to brand me a cheater?""
The shoppers in the surrounding aisles had stopped entirely now. An elderly woman near the crib displays glared openly at Brandon, muttering about shameless men. Savannah’s face flushed pink with embarrassment as she noticed several people whispering.
""Brandon, let's just go,"" Savannah hissed, pulling on his arm with urgency. ""We have the VIP stroller consultation booked at three. Don't make a scene.""
Brandon pulled his arm away from Savannah, his pride wounded and toxic ego spiraling out of control. He pointed an accusatory finger past Julian, aiming directly at my face. ""You think you won something here, Maddie? Look at you! You're going to raise a bastard child entirely alone in a cheap rental apartment! No husband. No family support. While I have wealth, Savannah's empire, and a legacy waiting to be built. When your child asks why they don't have a father, make sure you tell them how desperate and pathetic their mother was!""
Julian moved so swiftly that Brandon didn't even have time to flinch. With one hand, Julian seized Brandon’s pointed wrist, his grip tightening with surgical precision.

""That is enough,"" Julian said, his voice dropping to a lethal, quiet register that silenced the entire store. ""You will walk out of these doors right now. If you ever utter another word of slander to this woman, I will personally ensure that every legal, medical, and ethical truth regarding your past conduct is brought into broad daylight. Trust me, Brandon. You do not want that Pandora's box opened.""
Brandon pulled his arm back, rubbing his wrist in shock. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a strange, panic-laced confusion. He stared at Julian, then at me, before turning on his heel and storming out toward the automatic doors. Savannah scurried frantically behind him on her high-end ankle boots, leaving a heavy silence hanging in the air.
