Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of legal maneuvers, tearful confrontations, and painful revelations. Vanessa didn't go quietly; she screamed, threatened custody battles over Chloe, and blamed everyone from Mom to the dance studio for her own downfall. But the evidence was insurmountable. Dad changed the locks by Sunday evening, and Vanessa temporarily moved into a nearby hotel while her lawyer scrambled to respond.

On Monday afternoon, Mom took time off work to accompany Dad and me to a formal meeting at the Rosebridge Dance Project. Mrs. Ames and Ms. Elena sat across from us at the long conference table in the administrative suite.

Dad placed a folder on the table containing printed screenshots of the email headers, the recovered 4K audition video, and a notarized affidavit admitting that the email declining Isabella's callback had been sent fraudulently without the knowledge of either parent.

""Mrs. Ames,"" Dad said, his voice humbled and cracked with emotion. ""I failed my daughter completely by not paying attention to what was happening under my own roof. But Isabella did nothing wrong regarding this submission. She worked tirelessly on this routine. I am asking you—begging you—to review her actual work.""

Mrs. Ames looked at Mom, who nodded firmly in agreement. The director inserted the flash drive into her computer and turned the monitor so Ms. Elena could see.

For the next four minutes, the room was silent except for the swelling violin music coming from the laptop speakers.

The video showed me in the community center studio three weeks ago, wearing my simple black leotard. Every turn was sharp, every leap suspended in the air with precision, and the emotion of the choreography flowed naturally through every line of my body. It was the best dance of my life. I had poured every bit of my heart into it, hoping Dad would look at me with the same pride he showed when Chloe scored a goal in soccer or nailed a routine.

When the video ended, Ms. Elena took a deep breath, her eyes visibly moist. She looked across the table directly at me.

""Isabella,"" Ms. Elena said gently. ""When I watched that garage video, I was heartbroken because I knew what you were capable of, and the tape looked like you had given up. But this... this is extraordinary work. This was easily the highest-scoring audition in the intermediate division.""

Hope flickered in my chest, faint but terrifyingly fragile. ""Does that mean...?""

Mrs. Ames sighed, folding her hands over the desk. ""It means, Isabella, that an enormous injustice was done to you. But we have a serious institutional problem. The fall showcase opened this past weekend. Chloe danced the Young Lantern role. But the Featured Traveler role was awarded to Maya Lin three weeks ago. Maya has spent a month learning the staging, fitting the costumes, and rehearsing with the senior company.""

My stomach dropped. Of course. Dance productions weren't magic; they couldn't just throw someone out of a role because of someone else's family drama.

""I can't strip Maya of the role she earned fairly,"" Mrs. Ames continued, her voice filled with genuine sorrow. ""That would be punishing another innocent child for the actions of an adult outside this studio.""

""I understand,"" I whispered, blinking back hot tears. ""I didn't expect you to kick Maya out.""

""However,"" Ms. Elena interrupted, leaning forward with a sudden spark in her eye. ""The Featured Traveler is a solitary journey in the original libretto. But the Rosebridge choreography is based on an older, traditional staging that includes a dual role: The Twin Stars of the Horizon. It requires two dancers performing mirrored, highly technical counterpoint choreography during the second act climax.""

Mrs. Ames looked at Elena, surprised. ""Elena, that hasn't been staged here in ten years. It requires an immense amount of rehearsal time, and the regional showcase is in three weeks.""

""Isabella knows the choreographic language,"" Ms. Elena insisted, looking directly at me. ""And Maya is strong enough to adapt. If Isabella is willing to rehearse four hours every evening after school, alongside Maya, we can petition the regional board to allow an expanded cast for the state gala.""

Dad sat forward, his eyes shining with desperate hope. ""I will pay for all the extra studio time. I will cover every costume fee, every late registration fee—whatever it takes.""

""We don't need your money to bribe the board, Patrick,"" Mom cut in sharply, though her eyes were soft as she looked at me. ""Isabella will earn it with her dancing. If she wants to take on the work.""

May you like

They all turned to look at me. The shame of shoving Chloe still lingered in the back of my mind, but alongside it was a fierce, burning hunger to prove that I belonged on that stage.

""I'll do it,"" I said without hesitation. ""I'll practice every single day.""
