Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

The next morning broke crisp and clear, the rain giving way to brilliant autumn sunlight that felt entirely at odds with the storm brewing inside our family. By 8:00 AM, Mom had downloaded both video files onto a flash drive and made three copies. She didn't call Dad; she called his mother, Grandma Keene, who was the true matriarch of the family and someone Dad respected above all else.
""Evelyn,"" Mom said into the phone, her voice steady and professional. ""You need to come over to Patrick’s house this morning. There is an emergency regarding Isabella and Chloe, and you need to see what has been happening.""
An hour later, Mom and I pulled up in front of Dad’s grand two-story house. Grandma Keene’s sedan was already parked in the driveway, alongside Dad’s SUV. Vanessa’s luxury crossover was parked crookedly near the garage, suggesting she had arrived late or left in a panic.
When Mom rang the doorbell, Dad opened it immediately. He looked terrible. His eyes were bloodshot, his shirt wrinkled, as if he hadn't slept a single minute.
""Lauren... Bella,"" he stepped aside, his voice hoarse. ""Come in. My mother is in the living room.""
We walked into the bright, open-concept living area. Grandma Keene sat rigidly on the sofa, her hands folded over her cane, her sharp gray eyes scanning the room. Vanessa was seated at the kitchen island, nursing a mug of coffee with both hands, refusing to make eye contact with anyone. Chloe was upstairs in her playroom, the faint sound of cartoons drifting down the staircase.
""Patrick told me what happened at the dance recital,"" Grandma Keene said, her tone clipped and direct. ""He said Isabella acted out physically, but that there were questions about an email. What is this meeting about, Lauren?""
Mom didn't waste time on pleasantries. She pulled the silver flash drive from her purse and plugged it into the large smart television mounted above the fireplace. ""Patrick, yesterday you acted shocked when Mrs. Ames showed you the email declining Isabella's audition. You claimed you had no idea how it happened.""
""I didn't!"" Dad said, taking a step forward. ""I swear to you, Lauren, I didn't send that email!""
""I know you didn't,"" Mom replied, selecting a file on the screen. ""Because your wife did. But that was only the second half of her plan.""
Vanessa’s head snapped up. ""What are you doing? Patrick, tell them to get out of our house! This is private property!""
""Sit down, Vanessa,"" Grandma Keene commanded, tapping her cane sharply on the hardwood floor. The sound was like a gavel. ""Let her play it.""
Mom hit play on the basement security video.
The living room filled with the scratchy, high-definition audio of Vanessa's voice from three weeks prior: “Yes, it’s done. I swapped the files. The studio will get the junk garage take Isabella did when she was exhausted. Chloe won’t have to share the stage with her. And Patrick won’t suspect a thing—he thinks Isabella just lacks discipline.”
On the screen, the night-vision footage showed Vanessa closing the laptop with a satisfied smirk, picking up her drink, and walking out of the frame.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Dad stared at the television screen, his mouth slightly open, the blood completely draining from his face. He turned slowly toward Vanessa, who had stood up from the stool, her hands shaking so violently that hot coffee spilled over the edge of her mug onto the polished granite counter.
""You..."" Dad's voice was a whisper, but it vibrated with a rage I had never heard from him before. ""You did that to my daughter?""
""Patrick, listen to me—"" Vanessa stammered, backing away toward the kitchen cabinets. ""She was overshadowing Chloe! Chloe has worked so hard, and Isabella just breezes in with her natural flexibility—it wasn't fair! I was trying to protect our family's investment in Chloe's future!""
""Our investment?"" Dad shouted, slamming his fist onto the island counter with enough force to rattle the dishes. ""She is my child! You sabotaged my fourteen-year-old child and let me believe she failed because she was lazy! You let me sit at that dinner table and lecture her about working harder!""
""Patrick, calm down, Chloe is upstairs,"" Vanessa cried, tears streaming down her cheeks.
""Get out,"" Dad said.

Vanessa froze. ""What?""
""Pack your bags. Take your things and get out of my house,"" Dad said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold tone. ""We are done, Vanessa. We are completely done.""
