Chapter 1 - The Dark Cloak of Silence

The hallway outside the studio office felt cold, stripped of whatever glitter and pride had filled the auditorium five minutes earlier. The applause for Chloe's solo died away, replaced by the faint, muffled thud of forty children stomping through the final ensemble number. Mom stood with her arms crossed, staring at Mrs. Ames's laptop screen as if she were trying to burn a hole through the pixels.

""Patrick sent this?"" Mom’s voice was dangerously calm, the tone she used when someone was trying to pass a forged prescription at the pharmacy counter where she worked double shifts. ""Patrick doesn't even know the studio password. He barely checks his personal messages unless Vanessa reminds him.""

""It came from his primary account, Lauren,"" Mrs. Ames said quietly. She tilted the screen slightly further so Mom could read the full header. ""We sent the invitation for the in-person audition on September 7th. The decline came back the next morning. In our system, that meant Isabella was standing by her initial submission, imperfect as it was.""

""My initial submission was filmed in a dim garage on a dying battery,"" I choked out, wrapping my arms tightly around my ribs. My knuckles were still white, my fingers still tingling with the ugly, electric shock of having laid my hands on an eight-year-old girl. ""Vanessa said the good file—the one we spent three weeks perfecting at the community center—got corrupted when she transferred it to the cloud. She told me to do a quick take on her iPad before the midnight deadline or I wouldn't be submitted at all. She said Dad told her not to wake me up the next morning because the studio had already made its cuts.""

Mom didn't yell. That was the most terrifying thing about Lauren Foster; when she was truly furious, her voice dropped to a razor-thin whisper. ""Your father told you there was no second chance.""

""He looked me right in the eye over breakfast and told me that dance was about learning to take disappointment like an adult,"" I whispered, the words tasting like copper. ""He told me to support Chloe because she was young and needed the confidence boost. He said my time would come next year.""

The office door creaked open. Dad walked in, his expensive leather jacket still smelling of rain and the sweet, buttery glaze of lobby pretzels. Behind him stood Vanessa, holding Chloe by the hand. Chloe had dried tears on her cheeks, but she wore a plastic tiara that Vanessa had clearly produced from her designer handbag the second the stage lights went down.

""There you two are,"" Dad began, smiling with that polished, easy charm he wore like expensive cologne. ""Lauren, Elena told us you were back here. Look, what Isabella did to Chloe was uncalled for. Completely unhinged. Shoving a little girl before her big moment? We need to talk about grounding, maybe some counseling. Vanessa thinks—""

""Patrick, shut your mouth,"" Mom said.

Dad stopped dead in his tracks. The easy, rehearsed smile vanished, replaced by an uneasy flicker of irritation. ""Excuse me? Lauren, your daughter attacked mine backstage. We aren't going to sweep this under—""

""Take a look at this screen,"" Mom interrupted, stepping aside and pointing a manicured, tired finger at the glowing laptop. ""Take a look at September 8th, 10:17 AM, and tell me why you declined Isabella's in-person callback.""

Dad blinked, his brow furrowing as he leaned forward over the desk. For a split second, genuine confusion crossed his features. ""What callback? What are you talking about? Isabella didn't make the cut. Vanessa told me the directors felt she wasn't technically ready for the Featured Traveler role.""

Beside him, Vanessa's hand tightened visibly around Chloe's small fingers. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her immaculate, foundation-covered skin looking like chalk under the harsh fluorescent bulbs.

""Patrick,"" Vanessa said quickly, her voice pitching slightly higher than usual. ""Don't let them derail this. We're here because Isabella acted out violently against Chloe. This isn't about auditions from a month ago. We have a disciplinary issue right now.""

""No,"" Mrs. Ames said, her tone authoritative and unyielding. ""Mrs. Keene, this is entirely about the audition. Because whoever sent this email intentionally sabotaged a student of this academy, and signed Patrick Keene’s name to the fraud.""

Dad turned his head slowly, looking from the screen to his wife. ""Vanessa... did you touch my laptop that morning?""

May you like

The silence that followed was suffocating. Chloe looked up at her mother, her little brow furrowing in confusion. ""Mommy? Is Bella not dancing because of your phone?""

""Be quiet, Chloe,"" Vanessa snapped, more sharply than she had ever spoken to her daughter in public.
