Chapter 4 - Digital Breadcrumbs

The drive back to Mom’s small apartment on Maple Street was entirely silent. The windshield wipers clicked back and forth, cutting through the heavy downpour. Mom kept one hand on the steering wheel and reached across the console to squeeze my hand every few miles. When we finally got inside, she made two mugs of chamomile tea, kicked off her work sneakers, and sat down at the small kitchen table.

""Drink your tea,"" Mom said softly. ""Then you're going to tell me everything that happened over the last two months.""

I held the warm mug between my palms, letting the steam warm my face. Slowly, the entire story poured out of me. I told her about the endless practice sessions in the basement, how Vanessa had volunteered to be the one to film my audition because Dad had bought a high-end 4K camera for her photography hobby. I told her about the day Vanessa claimed the SD card had corrupted, offering to film a replacement on her tablet in the dim, messy garage while Chloe was at gymnastics. I explained how Dad had told me the directors said my rhythm was off, how he urged me to be the 'bigger sister' and celebrate Chloe without being bitter.

""She isolated you,"" Mom said, her voice shaking with quiet intensity. ""She set you up to fail, Isabella. But that push tonight...""

""I know,"" I whispered, tears spilling onto the table. ""I felt like I was disappearing, Mom. Like if Chloe was standing there in the gold dress, nobody would ever look at me again. It was ugly. It was the worst thing I've ever felt.""

""It was wrong,"" Mom agreed firmly. ""And there will be consequences. You're grounded from your phone for two weeks, and you will write a formal apology to the studio board and to Chloe. But Isabella... you are not a monster. You are a fourteen-year-old girl who was manipulated by the adult who was supposed to care for you.""

Mom stood up, grabbed her phone from her purse, and placed it on the table. ""Now, we find out just how far this goes.""

""What do you mean?""

""Your father’s home network uses a cloud backup service for their shared devices,"" Mom said, her eyes narrowing with determination. ""He set it up five years ago when we were still finalizing the divorce, using our old family plan credentials. It backs up all connected drives, including cameras that sync via Wi-Fi.""

She opened a browser tab on her phone, typing rapidly. Mom might have been a retail pharmacist, but before that, she spent four years working tech support to put herself through school. She logged into the storage archive.

""Vanessa thought she deleted the file from the camera's local SD card,"" Mom muttered, her fingers flying across the screen. ""People who don't understand network backups always make that mistake. If the camera was turned on inside that house while connected to their home Wi-Fi...""

She stopped. A small gasp escaped her lips.

""Did you find it?"" I asked, leaning over the table.

Mom turned the screen toward me. There, listed in the cloud directory from September 4th, was a video file labeled Keene_Isabella_FeaturedTraveler_Final.mp4. The file size was 1.4 gigabytes. It was completely intact, uncorrupted, and timestamped three days before the submission deadline.

But there was something else.

Directly below it was a second file, a video recording taken from the basement security camera that Dad had installed to monitor the home gym equipment. The timestamp showed September 5th, at 11:42 PM.

Mom clicked play.

The grainy night-vision footage showed the basement studio. Vanessa was sitting on the workout bench with Dad's laptop open on her knees. The audio was faint, but the microphone picked up her voice clearly as she spoke into her phone on speaker.

""Yes, it's done,"" Vanessa was saying with a chilling laugh. ""I swapped the files. The studio will get the junk garage take Isabella did when she was exhausted. Chloe won't have to share the stage with her. And Patrick won't suspect a thing—he thinks Isabella just lacks discipline.""
