Chapter 8 - The Net Tightens

Gregory stood at the nurse’s station, dressed in an expensive camel-hair coat, waving a sheaf of legal documents in the face of the charge nurse. Beside him stood Kate, wearing designer sunglasses to hide her puffy, sleepless eyes, clutching a luxury leather handbag. Next to them was an oily-looking man in a pinstriped suit, holding an open briefcase.
Dr. Evans stood bravely in front of the locked glass doors leading to the pediatric intensive care cubicles, her arms folded across her chest, refusing to yield an inch.
""Mr. Miller, for the final time, the infant has a cast that was set under general anesthesia less than twelve hours ago,"" Dr. Evans said firmly. ""She requires intravenous pain management and forty-eight hours of monitoring. Furthermore, Child Protective Services has placed a medical hold on her chart.""
""That hold was based on the aunt's actions!"" Gregory barked, slamming his fist onto the reception desk. ""The aunt has been detained! We are the victims here! My daughter was butchered in that woman’s house, and you are keeping her from the parents who love her!""
""Is that so, Gregory?""
My voice rang out across the corridor with a clarity that cut through his rant like a scalpel.
Gregory and Kate spun around simultaneously. When Kate saw me standing there—not in handcuffs, not in an orange jumpsuit, but flanked by District Attorney Sarah Lawson, Evelyn Vance, and five armed county detectives—all the color instantly drained from her face.
""Allyson?"" Kate whispered, her voice trembling as she took an involuntary step backward. ""What... what are you doing here? Detective Miller, why haven't you locked her up? She broke my baby’s leg!""
""Shut up, Kate!"" Gregory hissed, his eyes darting frantically toward the stairwell doors behind him. He recognized the tactical gear worn by the officers flanking Detective Miller. ""What is the meaning of this? Counselor, tell them to back off!""
The pinstriped attorney stepped forward, raising his hands pompously. ""I am representing the Miller family in an impending civil—""
""You are representing two felons caught on 4K multi-channel surveillance orchestrating a felony fraud conspiracy,"" Evelyn announced, stepping forward and presenting the certified court orders. ""Gregory Miller, Katherine Vance-Miller, you are officially served with an emergency termination of parental custody, an asset freeze, and concurrent felony arrest warrants.""
""What surveillance?"" Kate shrieked, her voice hitting a dog whistle pitch of pure panic. ""There were no cameras! That house doesn't have cameras! The neighbors don't have cameras!""
""The wooden birdhouse on my porch,"" I said, walking toward her, stopping three feet away. My voice was deadly quiet, filled with cold contempt. ""The one pointed directly at the driveway, Kate. It recorded every single word you and Greg exchanged inside that SUV at eight-forty-seven yesterday morning.""
Kate’s knees visibly buckled. She reached out to grab Greg’s arm for support, but Greg violently shoved her away from him, his face twisted in feral, cornered panic.
""It was her!"" Greg yelled, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger at his wife. ""She dropped the baby down the stairs on Thursday! She came up with the idea to use Allyson’s concealer! She said Allyson was weak and stupid and would take the blame! I had nothing to do with it! She forced me to go along with it!""
""You cowardly monster!"" Kate screamed, lunging at Greg with her fingernails extended, clawing at his face as hospital security guards rushed in. ""You threw her bassinet across the room when your parlay lost! You threatened to kill me if I took her to the emergency room! You did this!""

""Get them down on the floor! Now!"" Detective Miller’s voice boomed.
Four officers swarmed Greg, tackling him onto the polished linoleum floor, twisting his arms behind his back as handcuffs clicked shut with brutal finality. Two female officers restrained Kate, forcing her against the reception counter, her designer sunglasses clattering to the floor and shattering beneath a police boot.
