Chapter 1 - The Cold Metal of a Badge

The pediatric emergency department felt like an airtight chamber where all the oxygen had been vacuumed out. The bright fluorescent tubes overhead hummed with an irritating buzz, reflecting off the polished linoleum floor. I sat frozen on a hard vinyl chair, my fingertips still sticky with the residue of baby wipes and expensive liquid foundation. Detective Miller stepped forward, her badge gleaming under the hospital lighting, while Dr. Evans stood slightly behind her, clutching a digital tablet displaying an illuminated skeletal scan.

""Ms. Allyson Vance?"" Detective Miller spoke with flat, practiced authority. ""I am Detective Miller with County Child Protective Investigations. We have the emergency imaging results, and we just concluded an urgent phone conference with Paige’s mother, your sister Katherine. She informed us that Paige was completely sound and uninjured when she dropped her off at nine this morning. She stated that you called her in a manic frenzy thirty minutes later, claiming the baby had suffered a bad fall from your changing station. Step outside into the consultation alcove with me right now.""

My pulse hammered against my temples like a trapped bird. ""No, wait. That’s an outright lie! Kate never picked up my phone calls! I sent her half a dozen urgent text messages from my car the moment I saw Paige's leg, and she read them instantly without typing back. Look at my phone!""

I shoved my smartphone forward with shaking hands, but Detective Miller didn't even glance down. Her eyes remained fixed on my face with cold, unwavering skepticism. ""Your sister claims you called her from a burner app in a sheer panic before switching to text to fabricate a paper trail. Right now, Dr. Evans has confirmed an acute spiral fracture of the infant's left femur. A six-month-old infant cannot walk, run, or generate the torsional velocity required to snap their own thigh bone. More damning, someone spent considerable time applying a heavy layer of waterproof cosmetic pigment directly over the hematoma. You were the sole adult with custody of this child when that injury was presented to this hospital.""

""I wiped that makeup off!"" I cried out, my voice cracking as two passing nurses turned to stare. ""I was changing her diaper because she was screaming uncontrollably! She smelled like expensive face powder. I didn't put that filth on her! I brought her straight here because I realized she was suffering! Why on earth would I coat a baby in makeup and then drive her directly into an emergency room full of mandatory reporters?""

Dr. Evans spoke up, her voice clinically detached. ""Perpetrators of pediatric trauma frequently present to emergency services under the guise of the panicked rescuer when they realize the severity of internal displacement. Spiral fractures require violent twisting force. Katherine stated that you have a history of untreated postpartum mood swings and that you offered to babysit specifically to prove you could handle an infant. She expressed profound guilt for trusting you.""

Hearing those venomous words spill from my sister’s mouth through the lips of a doctor felt like a physical blow to my solar plexus. Kate and I had never been remarkably close; our relationship was always tainted by her quiet envy and competitive streak. When our parents passed two years ago, they left me the family bungalow in Maple Ridge, while Kate received an equivalent cash payout that her husband, Greg, promptly squandered on high-risk stock trading and luxury sports cars. But framing me for felony child abuse? Using her own infant daughter's agonizing broken bone as bait to destroy my entire life? It was unfathomable.

Before I could speak, two uniformed police officers flanked the hallway behind Detective Miller. ""Ms. Vance, you are currently being detained for questioning regarding aggravated child endangerment and felony battery of a minor. You will surrender your personal belongings, including your mobile device, and accompany us to the central precinct.""

""What about Paige?"" I sobbed, tears finally blurring my vision as cold handcuffs clicked around my wrists. ""She's only six months old! She's terrified and in pain!""

""Child Protective Services is assuming temporary emergency protective custody,"" Detective Miller replied without a trace of warmth. ""Katherine and Gregory are en route to give formal depositions and claim kinship rights. You need to worry about yourself.""

As they marched me down the sterile corridor, my mind raced through every second of that morning. Kate standing in my doorway, nervously smoothing her sweater, wearing a full face of waterproof makeup. The strange, calculated whisper before she hurried down the steps: You’re the one person I trust to make the call if she gets too fussy. It hadn't been an expression of sisterly confidence. It was an alibi.
