Chapter 4 - The Vanishing Trail

Evelyn drove me straight to her downtown office, bypassing my home entirely. ""The police have your house cordoned off with yellow tape,"" she explained as we rode the private elevator up to the fourteenth floor. ""Even if the search was tainted, they've stationed a patrol car outside to preserve the scene while they draft a formal warrant. You cannot go back there tonight.""

Her office was vast and minimalist, lined with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the glittering evening skyline. On the large conference table, Evelyn spread out a series of documents, satellite maps, and medical printouts she had managed to obtain through her network.

""We need a complete chronological reconstruction of Saturday morning,"" Evelyn instructed, handing me a clean legal pad and a pen. ""Every minute, every second. Tell me everything.""

I closed my eyes, forcing myself to relive every excruciating detail. ""Kate texted me on Friday evening at nine-fifteen. She said Paige had been fussy all week with teething, and she and Greg were utterly exhausted. She asked if she could drop Paige off for three hours on Saturday morning so they could run errands and take a brief nap. I agreed immediately because I loved Paige and wanted to help.""

""Did she mention Greg coming along?""

""No. She said Greg had an early morning appointment at the auto repair shop to replace the brakes on his truck.""

Evelyn immediately flagged that detail with a yellow highlighter. ""The auto repair shop. Which one?""

""The one near the county line—Miller’s Automotive on Highway 9. Greg always brags about knowing the owner.""

Evelyn picked up her mobile phone and dialed her senior investigator, a retired state trooper named Marcus. ""Marcus, pull the surveillance feed and gate logs from Miller’s Automotive on Highway 9 from six to ten this morning. Verify whether Gregory Miller’s truck was on the premises. Next, I want every municipal traffic camera along the route between Kate’s house in Oakridge and Allyson’s home in Maple Ridge.""

While Marcus worked, Evelyn turned her attention to the pediatric medical records Dr. Evans had filed. ""Look at the fracture description,"" she muttered, pointing to the radiology report. ""A non-displaced distal spiral fracture of the left femur. The radiologist notes faint periosteal reaction starting along the lateral edge. Allyson, do you know what a periosteal reaction means in pediatric radiology?""

I shook my head, my eyes burning.

""It means bone healing,"" Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. ""Bone remodeling in an infant begins within forty-eight to seventy-two hours following trauma. If there is visible periosteal elevation on that initial scan, that bone was not snapped thirty minutes before you walked into the ER! It was cracked days ago!""

A surge of electricity jolted through my veins. ""Then the emergency room doctor made a critical error! She told the detective that the injury was acute, occurring within the hour!""

""Dr. Evans is a first-year pediatric resident covering a chaotic weekend shift,"" Evelyn said, pacing across the hardwood floor. ""She saw an screaming infant, an unmistakable spiral fracture, and cosmetic concealer deliberately applied to the skin. She assumed the fracture and the concealer were concurrent events occurring right before presentation. But if the fracture occurred on Thursday or Friday, someone was watching that poor baby suffer for days while planning this entire charade!""

Before we could celebrate this breakthrough, Evelyn’s private line buzzed. She tapped the speakerphone button. ""Marcus, what do you have?""

""Evelyn, we have a major problem,"" Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker. ""I checked Miller’s Automotive. Greg’s truck was never there. The shop was closed today for asphalt resurfacing. But worse: Kate’s SUV was captured on the intersection camera three blocks from Allyson’s house at eight-forty-two. She wasn't driving alone. Gregory was in the passenger seat.""

I gasped. ""Greg was with her? But he never came up to my door! She walked up the front steps holding Paige completely alone!""

""He stayed in the vehicle,"" Marcus continued grimly. ""And that's not all. My contact inside the county prosecutor's office just informed me that Kate and Greg have formally signed over full testimony to the District Attorney. In exchange for prosecutorial immunity regarding potential secondary neglect, they are testifying that Allyson confessed to the abuse over the phone. The warrant for Allyson’s formal arrest on Attempted Manslaughter and Child Torture will be signed by the magistrate at eight o'clock tomorrow morning.""
