Chapter 5 - The Silent Witness

The walls felt like they were closing in around us. The clock on the wall read eleven-forty-five PM. In less than nine hours, a judge would rubber-stamp an arrest warrant that would put me behind bars without bail, branded as an infant torturer across every local news network in the state.
""Think, Allyson!"" Evelyn urged, gripping my shoulders with unexpected strength. ""Did Kate say anything else? Did she drop anything? Did you see anything in her car when she pulled into your driveway?""
""I didn't look out the window when she pulled in!"" I cried, burying my face in my hands. ""I was in the kitchen warming up a bottle of distilled water because she texted saying Paige would be hungry upon arrival. I only opened the door when she rang the bell!""
""What about neighborhood cameras? Ring doorbells? Security systems?""
""Old Mrs. Gable lives across the street, but she doesn't even own a computer,"" I said defeatedly. ""The house to my left is currently vacant and under bank renovation. The house to my right belongs to the Henderson family, but they are vacationing in Hawaii for two weeks.""
Evelyn cursed softly under her breath, pacing toward the panoramic window. ""There has to be something. A digital footprint, a GPS tracker, an audio recording...""
Suddenly, my breath hitched. My head snapped up, my eyes wide. ""The birdhouse.""
Evelyn stopped pacing, staring at me with deep concern. ""Allyson, have you lost your mind? A birdhouse?""
""No, not a real birdhouse!"" I stammered, leaping to my feet so fast my chair clattered against the floor. ""Three months ago, a series of catalytic converter thefts happened along Maple Ridge Road. My neighbor Mr. Henderson gave me a decorative wooden birdhouse fitted with a solar-powered, motion-activated 4K hunting camera with night vision and wide-angle audio recording! I mounted it on the corner post of my front porch, hidden right behind the climbing wisteria vines, pointed directly at the driveway!""
Evelyn’s eyes widened with intense focus. ""Does it record to a local SD card, or does it upload to a remote cloud server?""
""Both!"" I shouted, my heart hammering like a war drum. ""It has an internal memory card, but it syncs every recorded motion clip to an encrypted private cloud drive whenever it connects to my home Wi-Fi network! I set it up on my iPad!""
Evelyn lunged for her briefcase, pulling out a high-performance legal laptop and an external connection hub. ""Where is your iPad?""
""It’s in my living room on the coffee table,"" my face fell. ""The police have the house sealed. We can't go in there without violating a crime scene barrier.""
""We don't need the physical tablet if you remember your master login credentials and your cloud server host!"" Evelyn commanded, booting up the machine and shoving the keyboard toward me. ""Log in. Right now.""
My hands were shaking so violently that I mistyped my password twice. On the third attempt, the two-factor authentication prompt flashed on the screen. Because the police had confiscated my mobile phone, my heart stopped—until I remembered that my secondary verification method was linked to my backup professional email address, which I could access directly via Evelyn’s secure browser.
Two minutes later, the dark dashboard of the cloud surveillance repository unlocked.
A long vertical list of timestamped video files populated the screen, marked with green motion-trigger icons.
""Saturday, eight-forty-six AM,"" Evelyn read aloud, her voice tight with anticipation. ""Click it, Allyson. Click it now.""
I moved the cursor and pressed play.

The high-definition camera angle provided a crystal-clear, unobstructed view of my entire paved driveway and the front porch steps. At eight-forty-seven AM, Kate’s dark blue SUV swung into the driveway and came to a stop.
Through the tinted front windshield, two figures were plainly visible. But what they were doing inside that vehicle made the blood freeze in my veins.
