Chapter 5 - The Confrontation on the West Side

When Daniel burst through the door of their basement apartment an hour later, his necktie was loosened, his expensive jacket was drenched in sweat, and his eyes were wild with sheer, unadulterated panic.
""Emily!"" he bellowed, kicking the door shut behind him. ""Where the hell are you?""
The apartment was dead silent.
The small, chipped dining table where she had eaten cold leftovers for three years was completely bare, save for a single white envelope resting squarely in the center. Next to it sat Daniel’s spare set of apartment keys and the bent safety pin Emily had used to fasten her winter coat.
Daniel lunged for the envelope, ripping it open with trembling hands. Inside was not a tearful goodbye letter or an apology. It was a formal Notice of Emergency Hearing from the Cook County Circuit Court, accompanied by a court order signed by an emergency judge freezing his concealed brokerage account, his firm bonus distribution account, and all associated credit instruments—effective immediately.
Attached behind the court order was a crisp, clear still photograph printed from the security camera above the bookshelf: his mother, Patricia, reaching deep into Emily’s purse with a smug grin on her face.
Daniel’s knees buckled. He collapsed against the edge of the kitchen counter, knocking over an empty glass that shattered across the linoleum floor.
His phone began to vibrate violently on the counter. It was his firm’s managing partner.
""Daniel,"" the partner’s voice boomed through the speaker, ice-cold and stripped of all collegiality. ""We just received a formal subpoena duces tecum from Victoria Vance’s office requesting eight years of your compensation records, bonus deferrals, and expense accounts. Furthermore, the State Attorney in Palm Beach just called our ethics committee to verify whether our firm authorized a forty-two-thousand-dollar expenditure on Worth Avenue this afternoon under your name. What in God's name have you done?""
""Sir, please, it's a domestic misunderstanding—"" Daniel stammered, tears of humiliation springing to his eyes. ""My mother—my wife—it's completely out of context—""
""The firm’s executive board is meeting at four o’clock,"" the partner interrupted flatly. ""Your electronic access to our servers has been suspended pending an internal compliance investigation. Do not return to the office until requested. Have your personal attorney contact us.""

The line went dead.
Daniel dropped the phone onto the floor among the shards of broken glass. His chest heaved as the apartment walls—the very basement walls he had forced Emily to endure while hoarding hundreds of thousands of dollars—seemed to close in around him like a suffocating stone tomb.
