Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

At that exact moment, Emily was sitting across a sleek glass conference table on the forty-first floor of a high-rise overlooking Millennium Park. Across from her sat Victoria Vance, a legendary Chicago family law attorney known throughout the state as the ""Velvet Shark."" Victoria had spent the last forty minutes reviewing Emily’s color-coded financial binders, flipping through pages with a look of predatory admiration.

""Emily, this isn't just a standard divorce filing,"" Victoria said, removing her reading glasses and resting her chin on her steepled fingers. ""This is textbook fraudulent concealment of marital assets, accompanied by blatant tax evasion, breach of fiduciary duty, and criminal theft by a third party.""

""Can he claim the money was earned prior to our wedding?"" Emily asked, leaning forward.

""Not a chance,"" Victoria replied with a dry, confident smile. ""Look at these dates. The primary brokerage account was opened three months after your civil ceremony. Every single stock option, crypto yield, and secret bonus check from his firm was deposited during the duration of your marriage. Under Illinois law, absent a signed prenuptial agreement—which you confirmed you never signed—every single penny generated during the marriage is marital property subject to equitable distribution.""

""And the black card?""

""The black card draws directly from the concealed account,"" Victoria noted, tapping the transaction statement Emily had copied. ""By keeping this account hidden from you while forcing you to pay for shared living expenses out of your municipal paycheck, Daniel committed constructive fraud. And as for his mother..."" Victoria let out a low chuckle. ""Patricia walked straight into grand larceny. In Florida, unauthorized use of a payment card exceeding twenty thousand dollars is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to fifteen years in state prison.""

Emily exhaled slowly. For years, she had felt small, invisible, and worthless. She had believed Daniel when he told her that her city job was insignificant, that her modest habits were embarrassing, and that she owed his family eternal deference because they were higher on the social ladder.

""What do we do first, Victoria?""

Victoria pulled a freshly drafted emergency motion toward herself and signed her name with a sharp flourish. ""First, we file an emergency ex-parte motion to freeze every single liquid asset bearing Daniel Hale's name or social security number before he can wire the remaining $344,000 to an offshore shell. Second, we file for an immediate petition for dissolution of marriage citing irreconcilable differences and financial fraud. And third..."" Victoria looked up, her eyes gleaming with wicked satisfaction. ""We contact the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office and inform them that the individual currently detained on Worth Avenue was never an authorized user on that account.""
