Chapter 3 - The Palm Beach Standoff

The tropical breeze along Worth Avenue felt suddenly freezing to Patricia Hale. Still clutching her heavy black metal card, she stood frozen near the front entrance of the boutique while her church friends watched her with wide, bewildered eyes.
""Patricia? Is everything alright, dear?"" asked Rose, leaning in with genuine concern that only amplified Patricia’s mounting mortification. ""Did Daniel say the card was compromised? We can put the bags back if there's a problem with the funds.""
""Nonsense!"" Patricia snapped, her cheeks burning bright crimson beneath her layers of bronzer. ""Of course the funds are fine! My son is a senior partner at a world-class firm. He simply... wanted to verify that it was indeed his mother using his personal line of credit.""
She pulled the phone back to her ear, but Daniel had already hung up on her. Frantically, she dialed his number back, but the line went straight to voicemail. Beginning to sweat profusely under her tailored linen jacket, she hurried out of the store, the three church women trailing behind her in awkward silence.
Patricia ducked under an awning of blooming bougainvillea and dialed Emily's number. It rang once and disconnected. She dialed again; it went straight to an automated message stating the subscriber was unavailable.
""Ungrateful little wretch,"" Patricia snarled under her breath, gnawing on her manicured thumbnail. ""She did this on purpose. She left that card right in her purse to humiliate me!""
""Patricia?"" Rose called out from five yards away, holding a designer sunglasses case. ""The manager inside says the fraud protection unit just flagged the transaction. They want you to come back to the desk to show personal identification matching the name on the card.""
A wave of nausea washed over Patricia. The card bore the name Daniel Hale. Her driver’s license read Patricia Hale. In upscale boutiques catering to billionaire clientele, unauthorized use of a high-tier corporate line was treated with zero tolerance.
Two tall security guards in tailored dark suits stepped out through the boutique's glass double doors, their expressions polite but unyielding.
""Ma'am?"" the first guard said, his voice quiet, firm, and carrying across the sunny sidewalk. ""The merchant bank has requested that we secure the physical card and verify your power of attorney for the cardholder before you depart with the merchandise. Would you mind stepping back inside with us, please?""
The women from the church gasped collectively, taking two instinctive steps backward away from Patricia as if she were carrying a contagion.

""I am his mother!"" Patricia shrieked, her voice bouncing off the marble facades of Worth Avenue. ""How dare you speak to me like a criminal! Do you know who my son is in Chicago?""
""Ma'am,"" the guard repeated calmly, unhooking a radio from his belt. ""Please step inside, or we will have no choice but to involve the Palm Beach Police Department.""
