Chapter 7 - The Arrests

At 8:30 PM, the hallway outside Room 412 filled with the heavy thud of tactical boots and the arrival of Assistant District Attorney Sarah Vance, my former classmate from Columbia Law and one of the most ruthless prosecutors in the state.
When Sarah marched into the room, she carried a thick leather briefcase and an aura of pure, unadulterated vengeance. She looked at me in the hospital bed, took in the surgical monitors, and then turned her gaze upon Victoria, Daniel, and Madison Whitmore.
""Claire,"" Sarah said, squeezing my hand with fierce solidarity. ""I got Hayes's call. The emergency warrant has been signed by Judge Martinez. The state is taking immediate jurisdiction.""
Victoria tried to stand, attempting to summon the haughty dignity of her family name one last time. ""Sarah Vance! Your father plays golf with Arthur's brother! You cannot treat us like common criminals! This is a minor domestic dispute that our private counsel will resolve in the morning!""
Sarah didn't even blink. She opened her briefcase and pulled out three red-stamped documents.
""Victoria Whitmore, Daniel Whitmore, and Madison Whitmore,"" Sarah announced, her voice ringing clear through the maternity floor. ""You are hereby placed under arrest for Felony Conspiracy to Commit Custodial Interference, Grand Forgery of Legal Instruments, Witness Intimidation, and Scheme to Defraud under State Penal Code Section 190. In addition, federal warrants are currently being prepared for interstate wire fraud involving the transfer of funds to Attorney Richard Sterling.""
Two female officers stepped forward, producing steel handcuffs.
""Don't touch me!"" Madison screamed, flailing her arms as the metal cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. ""Mom! Do something! Daniel, tell them! I can't go to jail! I have a facial appointment tomorrow! I can't be locked up!""
""Be quiet, Madison!"" Victoria hissed, her voice cracking with pure panic as an officer pulled her arms behind her back. ""You will regret this, Claire! You will never see a single dime from the Whitmore Trust! I will spend fifty million dollars to destroy you! I will drag this through every court in the country until you are bankrupt and sleeping in the street!""
""Mrs. Whitmore,"" I said, leaning back against the pillows with absolute composure. ""As a former federal prosecutor, let me give you some free legal counsel. When the grand jury sees your emails, your wire transfers, and the forensic analysis of that forged signature, the state will freeze all assets associated with the conspiracy under civil asset forfeiture statutes. Your fifty million dollars won't even buy you bail.""
Daniel offered no resistance. As the cold steel locked around his wrists, he dropped to his knees beside my bed, sobbing uncontrollably.
""Claire, please... think of Noah! Think of our son! He needs a father!""
May you like
""Noah has a mother,"" I replied, refusing to look down at him. ""A mother who protects him. You are not a father, Daniel. You are an empty shell in a cashmere sweater. Captain Hayes, please remove these criminals from my presence. They are contaminating the air my children need to breathe.""
The officers hauled all three of them out into the hallway. Victoria’s shrill threats, Madison’s hysterical wailing, and Daniel’s pathetic begging echoed down the corridor, fading into the distance until the heavy double doors of the ward slammed shut.
