Chapter 2 - The Facade Cracks

Within thirty seconds, the door swung wide. Charge Nurse Evelyn rushed in, followed by two security guards whose radios crackled with static. The room suddenly felt claustrophobic, crowded with tension and the threat of imminent violence.

Victoria didn't miss a beat. In an instant, her sneer dissolved into an expression of theatrical, tear-soaked despair. She clasped her hands over her mouth, stumbling backward against the guest armchair as if she had just survived a physical assault.

""Thank God you're here!"" Victoria sobbed, pointing a trembling finger at my bed. ""Please, help her! She's completely lost her mind! The anesthesia... she’s having a violent psychiatric break! She started screaming that her babies were being stolen, ripping at her surgical dressings, threatening to throw herself from the window! Please, get her sedated before she harms herself!""

Evelyn looked alarmed, her medical instincts immediately kicking into high gear. She glanced at the telemetry monitors, which were beeping rapidly as my heart rate climbed, then looked at the white baby basket on the table and the thick legal brief in my lap.

""Ma'am, step back from the bed,"" Evelyn commanded gently, reaching toward my arm to assess my vitals. ""Claire, sweetie, look at me. Are you in pain? Do you know where you are?""

""I know exactly where I am, Evelyn,"" I said, keeping my breathing level and deliberate. ""And I am in full possession of my faculties. I pressed the alarm because this woman entered my private room without medical authorization, brought unauthorized nursery transport, and presented me with forged adoption papers aimed at kidnapping my daughter.""

""She's hallucinating!"" Victoria shrieked, her voice reaching a shrill, piercing pitch that echoed down the quiet maternity ward. ""Those are family papers! Consensual family arrangements! Two uniformed officers are right outside—I asked them to wait in the hallway because I was terrified of what she might do!""

Victoria yanked the door open and waved frantically. Two patrol officers from the precinct stepped into the room, their hands resting cautiously near their belts.

""Officers, thank heavens,"" Victoria gasped, wiping nonexistent tears from her cheeks. ""My daughter-in-law is exhibiting severe postpartum delirium. She signed legal custody transfer papers yesterday afternoon in sound mind, and now she's threatening violence against the hospital staff and accusing me of crimes. Look at the papers! Look at her signature!""

One of the younger patrol officers stepped forward, looking uncomfortable in the middle of a high-society domestic meltdown. He reached for the folder, but before he could touch it, heavy, measured footsteps sounded from the corridor.

The crowd parted automatically as a tall, broad-shouldered man in a crisp dress uniform entered the room. Gold braid gleamed on his shoulders, and the silver insignia of a precinct commander rested on his collar. Captain Robert Hayes looked around the room with the sharp, unblinking authority of a man who had seen every conceivable human deception in twenty-five years of service.

His eyes swept over Victoria's frantic theatrics, moved across the patrolmen, and finally settled on my face.

Captain Hayes froze. His eyebrows lifted slightly, his jaw tightening as he took in my pale skin, hospital gown, and the undeniable fire burning behind my eyes.

He didn't look at Victoria. He walked straight past the security guards, approached the right side of my bed, leaned down close enough that only I and the nearby nurse could hear, and whispered three words that shattered the air.

""Federal Prosecutor Bennett.""
